Why is the paint bubbling on my tank?

I was doing some work on Patrick yesterday and after removing the tank cover I noticed some bubbles (like blisters) in the paint around the front of the tank. The paint surface isn't broken and when pressed with a finger they appear to be hollow (air filled). Anyone else encountered this before? I can't imagine that the tank is rusting away from the inside badly enough to cause that on a 7yr old bike? Could it be something to do with the cover not allowing moisture to escape? Or has he got Chicken Pox and if so what's the cure? Quarantine? :rolleyes:

Poor bikes so embarassed at being called Patrick its come out in spots.:D
How often do you take the tank cover off for an airing/clean and waxing?.
My baglux has been on for about 5 years,no problem.

LOL :D Well he does bare a resemblance to a certain star gazing old duffer from the telly......... :eek
Only take the cover off for maintenance but it's only been on for about 12 months so far :nenau
Maybe I should leave it off for a bit and see what happens :thumb
 
Paint bubbling from underneath like that is usually down to the tank having been not entirely clean before it was painted.....it takes some time to come through but it will eventually :(

...or rust coming through from inside. GS has thick metal + inner coating so probably not in this case.

stick a pin in a bubble, poke at the metal behind & see if petrol comes out :eek:

Nah, don't reckon Eli, the tank is in fine fettle otherwise, as I said it's only 7yrs old. I reckon it's just the topcoat raising for some reason :)
 
it may well go down again & be undetectable when the weather warms up.


i had a ducati do that once :rolleyes:
