.... than the standard GS ?
Been perusing information on the R100GS on Phil Hawksley's site -
www.bmbikes.co.uk/bmwmodels.htm and see that the R100GS weighs in at
210 Kg whereas the PD tips the scales at 236 Kg.
That's an extra 26 kg.
This is wet weight, fully fuelled.
Now I know that the PD has a larger tank, 35 litres as opposed to 24 litres so we have the extra weight of 11 litres of fuel but Google tells me that petrol weighs in at 0.73 kg per litre so an extra 11 litres of petrol accounts for 8 of the extra kg so where does the other 18 kg come from ?
Just wondered like.
Thank you.

There's 2 models of the 80/100GS the earlier ones (86 to 90) didn't have the roo bar (or what ever it's called) or fairing. I suspect the lighter weight is for the earlier bikes. The extra weight over the earlier bike would be the fairing, roo bar, larger dash, bigger headlight and the large 3 part bash plate. I think the PD had a kickstart gearbox as standard. Obviously the PD tank would weigh a lot more - it's got a tool box built into it as well so is a fair weight on it's own.

Just looked. the 90 to 94 standard r100 weighs 216kg according to Micapeak so that's 6kg for the fairing, roo bar, rev meter and bigger headlight. Leaves 12kg for the 3 part bash plate, kick start gearbox and large tank.

Some items increasing the weight of the PD over a standard GS would include front fender upper mud flap, larger tank with knee pads (in addition to the extra fuel itself), hand guards, engine lower shields and bash plate, frame mounted fairing (with wrap around bar) including clock, tachometer, and heated grips. Also I *think* the PD came standard with bag mounts where the GS did not.
For 1991 the regular GS received the frame mounted fairing with tachometer so it would be heavier than those made prior.

Is there an echo?

Thank you people, appreciated.
Listened all the way through that Ash but they never sang anything about the weight of the PD and thanks brassmonkey, have just got the scales out to check on your weight of air theory.

Not my theory, just something I was told. :D

well according to haynes the r100G/S 1991 on weighs 220KG and the 1991 on G/S PD weighs 236KG and the 210 KG is for the r80GS and r100GS 1988 -1990 (pre roo bars and fairing). but something i also noticed is that they both have the same maximum permissable weight of 420KG. hth Bm

Wiley,

Just a bit of fun on my part. You'll get used to the Brit sense of humour :)

Thanks for posting :thumb2

Thanks Rob. Still, someone (such as me) that types about 3 words per minute shouldn't leave for the refrigerator in the middle of typing a reply. I was thirsty though :-)

Having held both tanks when swapping

(24l steel and 35l PD plastic) in my hands within minutes of each other, I seem to remember there's not much actual difference in the weight of the tanks themselves. Fair amount of bulk, but not much weight difference, maybe a kilo or two (that's for tank, any pads, lids, 2 taps each, no fuel).
As the running-gear's essentially the same for the PD and non-PD bikes, the max-permissable weight will be the same (same wheels, frame, etc).

From the rider's handbook for the R80GS/R100GS/PD (all versions with the roo-bar fairing):
dry weight (no tools or fuel):
R80GS 192kg
R100GS 197kg
R100GSPD 207kg

wet weight (full tank, ready to roll):
R80GS 215kg
R100GS 220kg
R100GSPD 236kg

so there's a 10kg difference between the PD and the 100GS dry, rising to 16kg wet (so about 6kg fuel-load difference, sounds a bit light for 11l to me)
