Why no nearside heel guard?

I have had my '08 GS for about a month now and I recently noticed that the ankle armour on my boot has already rubbed away a significant area of paint from the nearside framework:mad: Why is there no heelguard there? There is one on the offside and I would expect one on an £11.5k bike:spitfire
Does anyone know of an aftermarket heelguard? As a temporary measure, I have wrapped a length of clear cabletidy coil around to protect it, but I don't want it to be permanent..

Same here. I'm using a carbon chain stay protector from a cycling shop.

sells heel guards.

I've had the same issue as you, but he's sent me the wrong colour! I'm swapping them next week.

Can you post a link to them? I just took a look at nippy normans and the only heel guards I could find appeared to be for the right hand side. They also do a "frame guard" that looks huge. I think I'd like to see one of those for real first..

There's a link to Nippies site at the top of this page in the site header bar, just above the Baskerville Hall banner.

Val.

Oops:blast Maybe I should have written "can you post a link to the heel guards?"

I can only find ones for the right hand side on nippy normans' site:nenau

... Paint rubbing off the frame, it's hardly a component failure more like a rider issue:duno

... Have you tried taking yer stirrups off :blast

... I'm not sure why BuMW would need to put a heel guard on.
... The offside guard is there to protect the more crucial rear brake mechanism

... I have 30,000 miles using size 11 clod-hoppers and nary a speck of paint removed from either side.

... Why does owning an expensive bike mean BuMW have to pay for absolutely everything and owners/riders are responsible for nothing :thedummy

Definately interested. How is your guard attached to the bike?

Since every bike I have owned till now has had heel guards in both sides, even the cheepest suzuki, there would appear to be a problem that they are solving. If a manufacturer places a surface with paint that is easy to rub off directly next to the ankles of a rider then it is common sense to protect it.

I have ridden 52,000 miles on a VFR, 17,000 miles on a Fazer, 11,000 miles on a FZR600R and 15,000 miles on a GS500; none of these bikes had a problem with my ankle armour rubbing away paint. Why? Because the manufacturers provided heel guards. I will not be doing away with my armour, since it saved my leg only 3 months ago, so it have to be a guard then..

I can't think of any other reason to spend so much money on a bike than that all reasonable problems and reliability issues will have been addressed. I ride bikes to guarantee that I can get to my clients on time, not as a frame from which to hang piles of aftermarket junk to make up for the shortcomings of the design.

I do look after my bikes, but I ride with full body armour and not in slippers with legs bowed like Charlie Chaplin..

Just fitted Karnevil's heelguard to my GS. Took less than 5 minutes, looks great and totally solves the problem! £27 very well spent..

My paint has rubbed off there too. I just put some grey foam tubing I found around it. Looks fine and does the job.

I'm sure it looks lovely :augie It'll stop the frame bursting in winter too :p

Hi, I've had the same thing with my first R12GS, so on the new one I fitted some see-through plastic film on that spot. The kind that's used to protect petroltanks and fairings, so it's a pretty strong film. It does the job, and doesn't affect the look of the bike, since it's hardly noticeable.:bounce1
