Got a wireless modem installed on the ground floor (talk talk, was tiscali) but can't get it to work upstairs. can't really move it any closer, so is there a device for boosting the range?. In the past have picked up signals from an office (abroad not in uk) accross the road from hotel and got FREE!! from 9am till 5pm!). Had a look in maplins catalouge many devices but what will work?. Any advice appreciated and keep the peace here!.

Edimax

+1 for the edimax. Can be used to do all sorts of things wifi but you'd want it in Universal Range Extender mode (in manual - dead easy to setup).

Get one off Amazon

If your current wireless router is 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g standard, you'll get a better range by swapping to an 802.11n unit.

n units have approximately twice the range of b and g. a units are the weakest.
