Wilbers

Used to get this crap off the airhead owners in the o.c if BMW and everyone else had this attitude there they would have been history and we would never discovered the isle of wight

Don't touch the brown acid, maaan :D

so, maybe I'll get both the Ohlins and the Wilbers re-built, two rebuilds is less than one new anyways, so

Will it be worth adding the separate preload bit to my Wilbers? Adds another £100 and what with a re-spring too it could be neck end of £300 - anyone upgradede by adding that on and thinks its a briliant addition?

I find I don't use it on the Ohlins that much - worth £100 extra

Maybe I should hardtail it :D

i find it's easy enough to adjust the ohlins on my g/s without an adjuster, but it might be different with a para or a wilbers. it depend where the adjuster rings are. on my PD with WP shock, they were inaccessible without removal of the shock (which was no big deal).

i wouldn't bother.

How many times are you gonna use the hydraulic preload? once or twice a year? It takes just as long to move the rings with the spanner. Spend the money on a Starsky & Hutch cardigan I say:thumb2

So Ohlins and Wilburs are over priced and not good enough, YSS are no good cause they leak and are made in Taiwan, Hagon are cheap crap, where do we go from here?

Looks like I'll get the wilbers rebuilt - I guess valved and re-strung seeing as it's a squecky little boingy thing - but as a spare and get the Ohlins overhauled for main use. The Ohlins has done 5 or 6 years (a fair bit challenging :D) with no probs at all so seems logical.

So...in a years time when you get a post from Arseville* west Africa you Wilbers fellahs can say "Told you so"

And I can carry a pre-drilled tyre lever in case I want the badass look

* it's in the Congo I think

Had a wilbers on my hp2 rally bike for 3years with one service not one problem ever fantastic b t w ohlins put the rod through shock body on the second rally,,,,,,,

Me likey my Wilbers:thumb2 But as my skeleton is made from depleted uranium I've run out of pre load when two up.

I found the wilbers too hard for my 10st. Bought a lighter spring from the UK wilbers importers. Rearly nice guys and good quick service.

Ta

I found the wilbers too hard for my 10st.

Surely some mistake...in the GS Club  10st...naw...inconceivable  Sounds like you've taken the motor out of cycle there Pete :D

Thanks for the post, they're the chappies I spoke to after seeing the link to Revs on side of site here, so good to hear raise, they sounded good on phone :thumb2

Sticking to a simple re-valve and spring without the indulgent add ons, see how we go :thumb

Having talked to Revs regarding my other probs with shock mounting there were some interesting points regarding Ohlins / Wilbers. They service both, but changed to Wilbers sales (can't have both)

The one thing that comes through is you should never buy an off the shelf shock...unless you are an off the shelf person. ie average size and weight, boring rider, steady and no adventure :D

From what they said I don't think Wilbers offer that anyway - they ask what you want and assemble your shock for you and you needs - that's the impression I got anyway. Naturally on rebuild that's what they ask. The rebuilt shock they did for me was very very much an improvement over the peice of shite that came with the bike - for those very reasons.

I've heard of people bemoaing failures in all sorts of shocks - but generally they are either 'inherited' (like my Wilbers) - or off the shelf items.

A standard shock isn't up to more extreme use - it'll handle the odd bit of trail etc - but loaded hard riding it was never bult to take as a 'standard item'.

Wilbers and Ohlins are basically the same quailty componants - but unless you specify what you want, they are not likely to work properly.

Both the rebuilt Wilbers and the rebuilt Ohlins are both superb now (though neither is mass mileage tested!)

Both Revs and Kais have proving an excellent service :thumb2

I needed two shocks as I have two bikes. I think I'll go Ohlins for the trip as it was tested last time sucessfully, with Wilbers in reserve - though in reality a spare at home is unlikely to be as easily chaged as getting the Ohlins repaired (if needed) locally.

I'l update this thread in forthcoming years

When I was deciding between Ohlins & Wilbers both the ohlins specialist over here (Robert Taylor - very good local reputation for his work) & Wilbers specialist Greg from Aussie (once again good rep from the 2 headed locals there) told me that once I supply my weight, type of riding etc etc that the shock will come from the factory ready to plug & play.

Armed with that info from both sides of the fence I went with Wilbers bought thru the States from a reputable expert there.

As mentioned before when it arrived & was fitted it was very harsh & over the years maybe has softened or I have hardened.
