Will GS ADV wheels go straight onto a normal GS?

Afternoon Folks

I’m booked to go trail riding in Cumbria and Scotland on my 1150GS this weekend. The plan was to use my tourance tyres – however this was before it slashed down with rain for a week. I’m now thinking that trail riding on wet slippery trails on tourance tyres could be a little tricky to say the least. I’ve just spoken to a mate of mine who has very kindly offered to allow me to swap the wheels over from his TKC80 equipped GS ADV. As far as I’m aware the wheels and discs are identical in all but colour – however a GS riding mate of mine seems to think that the ADV has bigger disks and as such it’s not going to be as simple as a straight swap.

Can anyone confirm either way?

Thanks in advance.

Adam

You should also check that the bikes have the same ABS system as wheels from the latest models will not fit the earlier ones.

I think the main issue will be over what braking/ABS system is fitted. If both bikes have the Brembo style calipers or the EVO calipers, the swap should be ok. I looked at the Max BMW parts list, and the parts numbers for the brake discs on the 1150GS from 1999 to 2003 and for the ADV from 2002 to 2003 are the same, so the issue should be over what ABS system is fitted to which bike.

Excellent – thanks for all the info. Both bikes are non-ABS models so it looks like it should be easy – although my ADV riding mate is now considering coming along on his ADV which means I may have to use the tourances anyway:eek:

Adam....why not get a new set of TKC's fitted and keep the tourances for refitting when the TKC's are worn out.......shouldn't cost you more than a couple of beer vouchers if you ask a tyre chappy direct.

Well, it’s a good idea but I’m leaving tomorrow morning and the local tyre place don’t have a set in. I’m also a bit skint at the moment and can’t really go blowing money on a set of tyres that I will only use for this weekend – especially when I’ve got a lovely set of 17” cast wheels sitting by my side here awaiting me to save up enough cash for a set of 020’s!

Thanks for the idea anyway – I’m sure I’ll be fine – you can only dent a tank so many times:eek:  :(
