Will HID conversions invalidate your warranty?

As the title says?

Still got a year on warranty so not sure if it would affect it if you added HID lights to you dip and main beams.

Any experience of bikes gone in for warranty work after conversion? :nenau

I'm not sure about the legal position, but most reasonable dealers would only be likely to refuse a claim if the modification appeared to have been the cause.
So if your wheel bearings go, I think you'll be OK. If the wiring to the lights burns out, probably not!

Cant see how fitting HIDs could invalidate the warranty:

- You are effectively replacing the light bulbs with a light bulb and a small box. As far as i remember when i fitted mine i didnt need to chop any wires or connectors at all, and so original bulbs can be refitted in seconds.
- Circuit is fused (well magic electronic fuses) which provides protection and prevents the HIDs from drawing too much power and so you cant draw too much current and burning out the bikes brain.

In the event of an RID, Motronic or other electronics failure, I could certainly imagine a dealer blaming the HID ballast (in fact I've read threads on here about the RID going haywire if the ballast is mounted too close to the RID).

The ballast may only be a little box, but it's a box chock full of high frequency, high voltage electronics and as they originate in China, you can be sure their RF shielding probably isn't all it could be....

If I had a warranted bike (which ain't likely any time soon ), I wouldn't fit HID's until the warranty expired - I'd rather minimise the wiggle room for dealers faced with claims.

just my 2p

RID can lock, but it's only the LCD frozen, remove fuse 3 and it re sets.

Worry about it if it happens...........

What about fitting tyres that aren't as per the manual.........still insured?? Remus headers? GPS, etc. etc. list goes on.

take them off if you get an electrical problem, before going to the dealer?

tricky if you're on the hard shoulder at the time though ;)
