I'm looking at 2 old 1100s one has 54/5000 the other 84 now after watching a few vids of Chris Harris he mentions that they should be lubed/greased every 40000. So I guess the 5400 should have had it or need it and the same with the 84 although that'll be needing it's second greasing.

So should I get ready to do this on whatever one I get unless there's proof it's been done. I also shit myself when I saw the price of a clutch kit on the bay.

Is 1500 for an R reg 1100gs with 84 on it ok....looks good going by the photos

Greasing splines is an American obsession, it seems. Spline failure on the clutch driven plate and gearbox input shaft IS an issue with all airhead and oil head BMs. It's a design issue, but I would not allow it to become a worry. If the clutch is worn or the gearbox needs an overhaul then you can take the opportunity to do these jobs AND lubricate the splines. Otherwise, look for the more obvious matters such as history (owner and service), condition and price.

£1500 is not bad. Have a good look at it focusing on the expensive items mentioned above. Any whines or grinding from the gearbox? Walk on ... Ask about the clutch, it may have been replaced at those miles. A careful owner will have kept bills and even a written maintenance log. Battery? That's £70 plus if you need a new one. Brake pads and discs? Couple of hundred. And check the exhaust retaining nuts at the head. They are prone to corrosion and will crumble like buggery. Again, a good bike will have had these replaced or maintained preventively.

Cheers Scott....so it's a yanky thing I guess it's still to my eye on though

I know you say any noises ect walk away, thing is it's 250 miles from me just to go and hear it and if no good then walking away. Seller says it's fine with no issues, I also didn't know it's a dry clutch much the same as a car and as I said above £250ish for a new one, fk me! well that's the whole thing.

Put a post up in the pub or in the 1100 oil head section. Ask for someone local to the bike to have a shuftie for you. You can give details via pm rather than open post. That will at least tell you whether it's worth having a look at personally. If you get lucky, the person may know the bike or even the owner and help you make your mind up via a PM. That's the way ukgser works.

Yeah if you go on ADV rider loads of 1100gs stuff ...they yanks are pretty anal tho bout lubing n maintenance ...Ive kinda got my head round gs's noo ..was keeking ma breeks about clutches n final drive issues ..compared to jap stuff replacing a fd bearing every 40 odd thou miles is nothing compared to the expense of running a chain n sprockets.... hope ye get yin soon bud :thumb2

I guess it's his/their way to keep things lubed in case of failure, yea used to browse adv a while ago but gave up, don't know why really. Like you I'm kinda shitn it with clutches till you learn how to use them (I've been watchin to much Chris Harris :D....he's knows his shit though).

Bike wise I think it's a toss up between wrigbsy's or one from Barnsley (don't think the sellers on here though or if he is he's never said). Spoke to wrigbsy tonight, had a good crack with him, I'm def tempted to go for it as its 2 yrs younger (99 T) with 54000, the other is an R with 84000. Condition wise I think the R reg is a bit better but wrigbys is still good just "used" but seemingly rides very well, as they both probably do.

Decisions decisions :augie
