Win 98 to Win 7 networking?

Is it possible to network a Win 98 machine to a Win 7 jobbie?

I have a folder that is 1.7Gb i need to move from the '98 machine to the new device.

Modern USB sticks don't work in the 98 due to missing drivers, the 98 machine is not connecting to the t'internet so emailing is out of the question as is downloading the required drivers (why don't they preload a USB stick with its required drivers???)

Connected the two PC's via network switch and cables but that's as far as i've got

Can it be done???

If at all possible can the advice be given as if your trying to teach yer dad Nice and simple like

Struggling to recall the W98 interface but from the Windows 98 machine...

Open Windows Explorer.

In the top navigation bar enter

\\W7MACHINENAME\C$

(where W7MACHINENAME is the actual machine name of the Windows 7 machine e.g. SHEPW7) if you don't know the machine name try its IP address e.g.
\\192.168.1.3\C$

Does that show any folders or does it prompt for a username/password or give an error message ?

You could always try taking the 98 hdd out and set it to slave and connect it to the other pc via hdd caddy or actually in the machine and browse to the folder and move it to your win 7 hdd, just a thought.

What happens when you try the other way around.
i.e. from W7 try and open
\\W98MACHINENAME\C$

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/...mputers-running-different-versions-of-Windows indicates that both machines need to be in the same "Workgroup" - is this the case?

Sorted now, thanks to James! Bloody clever some bods, he used a remote access jobbie to sort it out, i'd love to say how he did it but it seems to work

Well all was fine untill I realised the files transferred were being corrupted, perfectly reliable machine paths were producing piss poor results, i was pretty much resigned to buying a more expensive set up to produce the new files for work, the whole network thing was flakey, but as luck would have it, i noticed a light blink momentarily on the network switch, just one, 6 steady, one blinked every so often perhaps once or twice a minute. traced it back to the win 98 machine, replaced the brand new cable with another and all is well so far

1.5 days, 15hrs work just for a poxy intermittant cable fault
