turned off my pc in the usual way and it started downloading some windows updates as it does sometimes at shutdown. It has been apparently downloading the first of 4 downloads for the last 3 hours. The 'blue wheel of activity' is still turning but this seems like a long time to be performing a windows update. They are normally very quick.

I'm not sure whether the computer has frozen or whether this is just a large update. Has anyone else experienced a particularly large update recently?

Does anyone know when/how it's safe to perform a hard shutdown?

I'm running Windows 7

Mine, (Win7) did an update last night but I didn't realise until this morning when it was updating the registry, so I don't know how long it actually took last night before finally shutting down.

While it was updating this morning, it went to a black screen and I left it for about 5 minutes and switched it off. Then when powered up again, it said Applying Updates, 35%, etc. etc. and successfully updated.

There looked like about 19,000 registry updates, but I don't think it should have taken any more than say 15-20 minutes.

If you have given it 3 hours, then I would be tempted to switch it off at the push button switch on the computer. If it doesn't like that, I presume it will tell you. If something goes pear shaped, you can always boot into safe mode and if necessary do a restore, but that shouldn't be necessary.

Good luck with it anyway. I do wish Win7 would give an obvious warning, before shutting down, that it wants to do an update. Bloody irritating if you are using a public access connection in say a library and they are just closing :blast

Thanks Grey

I waited until 5 hours but it was still hanging so I did a hard shut down. It rebooted no problem. On shutdown it downloaded 10 updates without problem and has processed those on further reboot. That was the 19,000 registry things that you talked about.

All good now - thanks for your help
