I'm looking for some help trying to get a new laptop with windows 7 to work wireless with a new Belkin N wireless router.

The setup quick start wants me to hard wire the modem, which I find a bit odd, so I follow all the instructions and it works fine (via the cable) but can I get it to work wireless........... Mad. I've looked through the manual, been on the Belkin website, (it shows a quick start foe windows 7 but............ Mad

Any help pleeeeeeease

I know this sounds basic but check that you have switched the wireless on at the laptop (most have a switch and some need alt-F5). It sounds to me like the wireless is either not on or not enabled.

The next step to try is to open the network and sharing centre. It should have a graphic showing the connection - click on any red cross and follow the instructions. At this point is may also ask if you want to enable your wireless card (just in case it has not already been enabled).

If you have security enabled on the router you will need to ensure the correct code is inserted. When it comes to the router, check the settings to ensure that the wireless is enabled at this end also.

Thanks for the reply, I've checked all you mention, but still no joy.
I'll have to phone Belkin this morning to sort it out. A bit annoying really as it says "windows 7 ready" on the box :augie

There's a whole load of traps when it comes to wireless networking.
SSIDs need to match.
Encryption methods need to match (including the differing protocols)
It's not really the sort of thing that can be diagnosed and fixed over a forum I'm afraid, there are just too many questions and variables.

I would start from scratch, and go through it in a logical fashion, (not trying to teach you to suck eggs)

First you have checked your laptop and you have checked your router and they can talk to each other with a cable, so you know your net connection and router are working fine and your computer can talk to the internet.

so the problem lies in the two bits of kit talking together via a wirelss connection, things to check.

are the computer and the router set to talk to each other on the same channel, some are set to auto some to a specific channel, 11 is often the standard.

Is your computer set to dial an internet connection each time it connects to the net? you want to make sure its set to always use network connection. Mine is set to NEVER dial if I ever have to use a modem again I will go in and change it manualy.

Check what security is being used, WPA/WEP 64bit/128bit

try a connection with all security switched off, see how that goes.

Has mac filtering been enabled on the router if so make sure the mac address of the laptop is in the router

Check the computer with a different router to check the wirless transmitter

check the router with a different laptop

hope that gives you some ideas you might not have thought of
