Winter stalling (Dakar)

Hi

This used to happen on really sh14ty days last Winter.
I had forgotten about it over the Summer.
Then yesterday - cold (ish) and wet

Bike starts fine (2002 650 Dakar)
Ticks over at idle no problem (1500 rpm)
Drives fine at 20mph +
But
every time I slow to stop for a red light the engine stalls and cuts out.

Bike starts again no problem (either in neutral or in gear with the clutch in)

Blipping the throttle as I approach the lights makes stalling less likely

This morning - cold (ish) and dry - was no problem

Anyone got any ideas

Check the battery contacts. i had similar symptoms which, after a suggestion on Trevor Geaorges 650 site, turned out to be loose contacts.

Joe,
the single is prone to stalling, but your 2002 model should have the revised engine management installed (BWM trying to get round the problem )

As said, check the connections.

Read the other thread, but it shoul dsay something about this;

When you start it, don't touch the throttle until the engine is running.

There is a tendancy when puching the starter with your thumb, to open the throttle, alebit slightly.

This upsets the engine management software. I used to experience it on my Dakar until I learn't the technique. Happened more in winter too.

You'd ride off, get to the lights and it'd die on me.

Just push the starter and wait for the engine to fire - the starter disengages once it's started, so there's no rush to take your thumb off the button.
