Do I need a wireless router, or will a wifi laptop talk to a desktop with PCI wireless card in it? I know that you need a router in a wired network system, so I assume you need a wireless router in a wireless system. I just wanted to check before I handed over the beer vouchers tomorrow.

Pondson has gone to Uni with both computers and I wanted him to back up his laptop data onto the desktop system in case the laptop gets nicked.

If the desktop is connected to an adsl modem. You can wirelessly share the connection with the laptop if you have a wireless card in the desktop.

I have done this between to computers already BTW...

If you just want to copy files over, all you need is an ethernet card in both 'puters and a crossover cable to connect them.

Wifi laptop will talk to desktop with wifi card, router is for internet access only (generally).

Does the laptop not have a CD/DVD burner built in, many do now.

Or get a USB pen drive, up to 2GB these days, thats a lot of data.

Don't buy network stuff, I can lend you stuff like cables and cards, no problem.

Cheers guys.

I didn't want to go the cable route and the data volume will be very low, at around 20-30 Word pages per week, so it didn't justify burning disks.

As he doesn't have a USB memory stick, I figured a PCI wireless card would cost about the same and give a simpler solution. I'll just get him the wireless card and get him set up that way.

Modern ethernet adapter probably won't even need a cross over cable - most are auto sensing.

USB memory sticks are cheap as chips (and great for getting stuff off other peoples computers too :mmmm )

Respectfully disagree with first sentence. Afaik, you need a wifi router to exchange files wirelessly, along with a wifi capability in each 'puter.
