Hi,

I've always considered Netgear to be decent kit. Can't recommend a particular model though, I'm on ADSL with sky. I assume that virginmedia is a cable connection?

Would strongly reccomend the Netgear DG834 router, top kit. I`ve had mine over 3 years and have never even had to re-boot it once. Amazon appear to have them at a very competative price at present. Good luck.

Buy a 'sky' one of ebay (paid a tenner for mine) and flash it back to the standard DG834G.

Thanks for that chaps .... Seems that ADSL is for BT line users? I have a Virgin cable service, am i correct in saying that a ADSL router will not work with my connection?

I'm on Virgin Media fibre-optic now and they supplied a Netgear Wireless G (WGR614 v9). Seems to work fine.

Um, the short version is sort of. You can't use the ADSL part, but if it's a wireless router and has at least one wired port you should be able to configure it with your cable modem.
May be worth calling VM up and talking to one of their sales people on 150 because you may be able to get one cheap.

Spoke to VM earlier , thought i maybe able to blag a router. the woman could'nt tell me whether i was on ADSL or not! she said that their routers are netgear and any netgear router was compatable..... or pay us £40 and we'll send you one:blast

Routers for Virgin Media

For Virgin Media you want a cable router not an ADSL one. ADSL routers are for use with broadband over a BT telephone line. Routers come in various types according to the type of wireless modulation method they use. This affects the speed over wireless and the types of device that can connect. The common types here in the UK are: 802.11b (11Mb/S, will work with older devices) 802.11g (54Mb/S, will work with modern devices, friendlier to your neighbours also with wireless) RangeMax and other MIMO devices (supposedly give much better range and reliability but only give any advantage with other equivalent devices from the same manufacturer) 802.11n (fast and neighbour friendly but only for the advanced user and many products dont actually work that well)

I use Netgear routers and find them easy to set up and use. A good source of cheap routers is eBay. I bought my Netgear 802.11b and now my Netgear 802.11n from there with excellent results.

Cheers guys ... got a Netgear WR something or other from ebay ...brand sopank' £25 inc P+P
