Wobbly heated grips??

OK, folks - advice please:

Used the heated grips for the first time this year this morning.
L/H grip started getting wobbly when hot, as if the glue holding it down was melting. Grip was fine again when it had cooled down - don't tell me that B*W use hot-melt glue to hold the rubber on:rolleyes:

Seriously, when I looked at the grips and took the bar-end weight off, there appears to be a heater element under the rubber.

The Question:

Is the element completely separate from the rubber? If so, can I slide the rubber off to re-glue it without damaging the heater element? Any tips?

Waiting patiently...

I think you'll find

that the grips are held onto the bars by two self tappers(well mine are anyway). These have probably been loose for some time but you haven't noticed because the grips are a tight fit and the heat has expanded them to show it up.
Or that theory could be utter bollox.

Probably. My left grip has split along almost it's whole length, and peels back cleanly from the element. There doesn't seem to be any glue involved at all as far as I can tell.

OK, thanks, Steve - if there's no glue involved, then a kettle of hot water over the grip should soften it enough to get it off, then back on with a bit of glue to lubricate it.

Watch this space...

Peter you will find that there are two little grub screws that hold the grip in place, you will need to pull the grip back slightly on the right side[towards the bike] to expose them. talking to my local dealer [Prestige] it is a common fault on BMW's that the left hand heated grips either fale or work loose, the earlier models had selftappers that located on the handlebars & were more secure:)

Geezer -

It's not the whole grip that is loose, but the rubber cover, and only then when hot. When cold, it is fine, but the exansion when hot is just enough for the centre section of the rubber grip to start sliding around.

Sounds like it's time to dig deep & get on down to your dealer for a new grip, about £55 if I can remember, Tank off jobby as it connects to the loom there. Just a second thought Motorworks do them for about £40ish I think.:banghead:
