Sounds like a poor earth/ negative connection. You could try 1 jump lead, attach one end to the negative battery terminal and the other end onto a good earth on the engine. If the bike starts easily then there is a poor earth connection from the battery to the top of the gearbox ( under the abs module).

don't you have something like this? Much simpler than dicking about with jump leads

I have a much cheaper version from Ebay. I had the same thing on my XR. All the volts, not enough amps and the bike failed to start after stopping at Tesco for petrol. Whip out my jump start pack and back on the road in under 5 mins (very accessible battery under the seat).

These things are worth their weight in gold.....and unbelievably the Harley branded ones are made by NOCO but cheaper! I had a ignition fault on my HD which left the bike in accessory mode switched on whilst on an overnight stay at a mates party last year. Next day, (after a suitable sobering up pause) the battery was as flat as feck, the NOCo/HD jump starter kicked the engine into life quicker than the normally charged bike battery would have done. Got my vote! :thumb2
I carry it all the time now.
