So I decided to hardwire a connection for a charger today anfter enjoying another ride.

Hmmmmmm............these bikes are not so easy to work on.

Firstly, all the fixings are torx .........have to buy some more tools just so that I can alter the gear lever setting .............what is that all about ?
What is wrong with allen heads ?

Secondly, the panels are not easy to get off .....but more importantly to put back on !
I took the LHS panel off, removing two screws from under the beak in the process. It was a nightmare getting things lined up again to get the thread of one of the screws under the beak to catch. Must be better way.

Still loving the bike from a riding perspective however.

But a little worrying that something may need a tweak on a long trip ......I wouldn't want to fight with those panels !

the panels weren't too bad, the bit that got me was the one for the beak,
took me bout 20mins to get it to bite.......................flip was i mad!!!

other than that it's quite easy i think

Pleased to here you are enjoying the bike...i think its a ploy of BMW to make it awkward for owners to 'tinker' with the bikes.

I bought the engine bars and the extensions for the plastics, i was going to fit them myself, but my Son came to the rescue....pleased really, the one which goes to the right foot rest is a right B$%ch...well, i was looking over his shoulder, watching....

My hand guards got delivered...phone call from the boy saying they had arrived...arrived home from work that night and they were fitted, ready to go..

I think i am really lucky.

It helps to have an extra pair of hands sometimes........I needed a third one today when I was trying to get the side panel attached to the beak !!!!!!!!!!

Is there anywhere recommended for a set of torx sockets ?..........I think I have seen mention of a BMW bike specific tool kit suitable for travel but cannot seem to find it now .

It took me at least that long too.....that one is a real pig.

The rest are easy .....but not very well engineered IMHO.

Halfords professional toolset, mines got all the parts for the GS and lifetimt Warranty.................can't go wrong!!

I already have the tools needed to deal with the female head torx bolts, allen head bolts and normal hexagon head bolts.

What I cannot find in my box is anything to deal with male head torx bolts.

I am definitley going to change the one holding the gear lever.....that bolt is the pits ! Will also replace any other male head torx bolts I come across.....anybody know of any so I can make a list

the front brake caliper has a pair on, you should only need a couple if halfords sell em in a kit, i'd reckon they sell em too!

They have to go !

Otherwise just duplicating the tools needed on a trip.

To save the hassle of re-fitting the beak bolts, I have found it earier to remove both side panels and the beak complete, with a bit of light twisting it can be removed forward from the bike and the reverse when fitting.

I have a BMW Motorrad tool kit, as well as a Touratech one. The BMW kit is very cool as there's one main handle which other bits clip onto - the torx bit holder, the spanner jaws etc. Also has an extension handle which clips in the other end.

Came with the bike, so no idea how much / where from...

Sounds like a good idea....will try that next time.

I guess from your comment that you have in the past removed the beak bolts......how difficult are they to get back in ?

Real fiddly bugg&*s, didn't want to line up for love nor money, much easier to remove the side panels and beak intact.

I had the same problem re the screws on the beak. In the end I took off the entire nose (left panel, right panel and beak) and rebuilt the lot in my kitchen.
