Following on from MikeP's World War One tour which has now been cancelled. I Thought I would post this up as an open invite see if there's any interest.
Seeing as I have a Weeks leave booked..
Belgium/France WW1 Tour....August, 21-08-10. 5 - 7 days..
I am currently planning a camping trip to Belgium for myself in late August, to visit some of the WW1 sites that dominate the area.
I have found a couple of campsites that would suit. http://www.camping-ypra.be approx 6 miles from Ypres, This site (recommended to me), as well as being ideally situated and motorcycle friendly, has great views over the Passchendaele valley, it seems to be well equipped and even has a bar! It also has a limited number of chalets available, If camping is not your thing....
Also this one.. http://www.jeugdstadion.be/index_english.htm Which I believe is only 5mins walk from the Ypres centre..
I am at the moment undecided which one to use, and I may well end up trying both...
It's my intention to travel to Zeebrugge via Hull or Newcastle, Arriving at the campsite on the 21-08-09. I will be staying to at least the following Thursday and may be stopping longer, up to but no later than the following saturday the 28th.
Some of the places I intend to visit. time permitting....
BELGIUM:
Tyne Cot Cemetary.
The Passchendale Memorial Museum - Zonnebeke: http://www.passchendaele.com/be
Hill 62 & Sanctuary Wood.
Langemarck German Cemetary.
Island of Ireland Peace Park.
Messines Ridge & Messines Historical Museum
Hooge Crater - Hooge Museum. http://www.hoogecrater.com/en
Polygon Wood.
The Menin Gate and the excellent "In flanders field" museum both in leper. http://wwwinflandersfields.be/
FRANCE:
The Somme - Thepival Monument.
Beaumont hamel & The Newfoundland Monument. - Albert.
Vimy Ridge. Arras.
Lochnagar crater.
Wellington Quarry and Mines. Arras http://www.carriere-wellington.com
I think it's reasonable to be able to visit these sites (and others) in the time allocated. I intend just to load the satnav up with these places as points of interest, and just have a wander around.
This whole area is covered with cemeteries and war sites in general, and I want to take a bit of time and see what is there.
It would obviously make sense to do the sites near Arras in one hit. So I would envisage taking one/two days for the sites already mentioned that are located in France.
There's no rigid timetable just a laid back holiday, if anybody would like to join in for any or all of this break you are most welcome to turn up and just come and go as you please.
All comments or views on places to visit are most welcome...
