worn out grips

HonaGS.

I'm starting to wear holes in my grips. Can I just replace the rubber grip (in which case who does them) or does the whole heated thing have to be changed (in which case I'll cover them in sticky tape cos I've better things to spend me money on).
And a headlight bulb popped last weekend. Shoddy workmanship I call, the bikes only done 50K.

What bike? On the 1150 you can't buy the grips by themselves, you have to buy the whole thing at about £60 a side IIRC!

However, you can buy some aftermarket grips ( forget which make ) and carefully cut the old grips off and slide the new ones on. Do a search, the 'how to' is on here somewhere - I did it on mine and it worked perfectly.

holes in rubber of said grips..

Or do what i did and use a roll of self vulcanising rubber adhesive tape!;)

Fill inside the holes with glue (i used araldite) then wind vulcanising tape tightly round the grip and then leave a couple o days for tape to vulcanise into a single peice and hey presto mate :D:D:D

get it from any hardware kinda shop...:beerjug:

Grips

You'll have to buy two pairs as the throttle one fits both sides. Just remove the end weights and cut off the rubber grip with side cutters and push on the new ones, job done(and I have). Don't use knife as you may damage the heating element.

You don't need to buy 2 pairs... You just buy 2 right hand grips from a BWM dealer. Specify the part number & that you want 2 & they will order them - cost about £20.

Cut off the old ones very carefully, so you don't damage the element, & then slide the new ones on. Spray down inside them with hairspray & they slide on really easily. As the solvent evaporates, the hairspray acts as a glue.

The original grips are glued onto some brown paper which protects the element & this is easily damaged, so use a craft knife to carefully cut the grip away where this is the case.

I've done this twice with my GS's - an old R80 & my current 1150 - & the principle was the same for both models.

HTH,

It is a very simple job to do HonaGS. Here is a link to MikeO's excellent thread over on ADVRider which shows you exactly how to do it. I used this when I replaced my grips a few months ago. :thumb2

I did this job a couple of weeks ago after ordering grips from Motorworks - as Aidan says is an easy job if you go carefully, roll the grips back and cut a bit at a time. Hairspray worked very well :thumb2

use cycle bike inner tube

said this before, think like a Yorkshireman.
I have fixed mine by sliding 2" of ccycle inner tube over the grip, lasts about 20 000 miles.

Thanks Guys, especially the link to the photo-how-to thing, so simple even a f**k-wit like me has a chance of doing it right.
For now though it's sticky tape till after the weeks hooning round Big Scotland. Once I'm back I'll have a go at it. Well after SWMBO's WIMA rally obviously. And the Farmyard Party, can't miss that. And Ireland, and the Yorkshire Pud....
OK so I'll be doing it over winter at this rate.
