Hi Guys, I'm looking to add an etra light source to illuminate my number plate and i'm not sure if an LED would affect the canbus if i connected it on the existing spade connectors on the rear bulb? If not suitable what would be the best way to wire a light source in. Should I avoid LED's and stick to a bulb set up?

Hi, I fitted an LED light/brake light to my top box (Hein Gericke unit), looped off the existing rear light unit. No problems with the canbus system.

Plug it in and see.

It won't blow up, that's the joy of the system.

If it works, all is well.

If it trips the electrics, report back for more help.

why would anyone want to do that? :eek

lol...i'm the guy that is selling the number plate - storage boxes and i'm just looking at a few ideas for illuminating the plate as the unit moves the plate away from the downlighter. I'm just finalising the design on a deflector piece but also looking at a wired Led version to add to the unit.

I've already tried connecting an LED on to the back of the spades and it worked ok but I wasn't sure if it would start throwing up silly faults like showing blown bulbs due to the current measurements by the canbus or if I'd need to put a fuse inline as some sort of protection. I can do basic electrics but wanted to make sure i'm not doing owt daft by just linking straight to the back of the existing spades.:blast

thanks for the extensive explanation. i was genuinely baffled :thumb2

LED are very low draw so they should not effect the "bulb Failure" warning signal.
I ran my lights from the accessory socket power (soldered to the back of the accessory plug). This is out of the Canbus.
The cool thing is the LED's stay on for a few minutes after you park really handy in the dark.

Nice LED lights, are these attached to the OEM lights or a completely new part?

Make sure it's got a series resistor and/or it is designed for 12V - not just any old raw LED, cos they are typically between 4V for a white one or blue one and around 2V for the other colours.

I'm looking to make it a simple fix so it can be easily wired in... so the 12v LED option does look like the best way to go, wired straight to the spades on the existing bulb connector. The ones I'm testing at the moment are from Halfords which are a 12v waterproof set designed for 'blinging' chav cars exteriors.

Thanks for the advice guys:thumb2

I replaced the plastic front piece with self made billet jobbies. I inserted individual LED's bought on ebay. The spots are mounted off the billet.
It all gives a good frontal profile, quite a few cars shift out of the way when they see me in the rear view mirror.
