I have a feeling this may be a silly question, but here goes:

I have never been able to write to the CD drive on my PC. I have some CDs (write once only) and it will not let me move files to the CD.

Is there some way I can format these CDs so that I can use them as backups ? If so, do I need a bit of software or is there something in Windows which will handle it all for me ?

Should I be using re-writable CDs perhaps ?

Cheers - philip

I am assuming that you don't have any CD writing software installed ?

If you are using Windows XP then it has inbuilt writing software and is basically a drag and drop operation. If you don't have XP then you need to get something like Nero.

You do have a CD writer and not just a CD reader drive don't you ?

No such thing as a stoopid question even though you usually push at that particular envelope :dabone

Last time we enquired wasn't your PC a 286 running Windows 2? :tosser

That's enough jibing, more info please...

OS? (95/98/ME/XP etc)
Type of drive? (CD-R, CD-R/W, DVD, DVD-R/W)
If the OS isn't XP what CD writing software do you have?

thanks andy - I knew i could rely on you :upyou

It's running Windows 2000 and the drive is a DVD rom (which I guess means it will read DVDs but not write them).

Not sure if there's any CD writing software on it - just had a quick whizz through and nothing obvious

Actually just had a word with our IT people at work and they're putting some CD writing software onto my laptop tomorrow !

Phil, you muppet......

ROM stands for Read Only Memory...what you have there my old fruit is a DVD reader which will read DVD's, CD's and possibly CDR/CDRW's depending on how they've been burnt.

You can load any software you like onto that machine but that drive will never ever write anything :D

a DVD-ROM drive will not write to anything. it would need to be a combo drive to write to CD-R
