What has google got to offer?

If you are using a normal on/off switch, run a fused spur from the battery triggered by a relay switched from an ignition live (then it all goes dead when you turn off the ignition.

Aah
that helps explain things as I found the wiring from the battery today with fused spur to a relay but didn't understand a very thin black wire from below the speedo which appears to go to the switch.
how is this little black wire used.
i get that it is an ignition live but don't understand how that triggers things as it is not connected to the relay just the switch.
it is just a very thin black wire which comes out of the clocks area and may be next to a thin blue wire which hasn't been connected in. any idea where to get an ignition live from.

sorry to be a nuisance but want to try and get these done before I go away on 4 th september.
cheers carroll

Post some images of the wiring because as stated the norm would be to have a live feed i.e. from the headlight to the relay which in turn enables power to the switch for the lights.

Ok Ill do that tomorrow but the relay just has a live to the battery and 2 sets of blue and brown wires to the Lights or the switch. Little black wire from under headlight housing appears to be spliced into and splice seems to go to the switch.

Hmm ........sounds like the loom is using a live from the headlight area for a live feed to the switch that enables the relay, the relay then uses a feed from the battery for the both lights. This would work too as its only enabled when the feed wire to the switch is live.

Edit The wiring sounds like its this configuration

The headlight connection just needs to splice into anything that comes on with the ignition i.e. side or head light as loading will be light as its only powering the relay coil

Thanks andi
After your comments and bit of google research this sounds most likely and ill check further tomorrow.
I just didn't want to disconnect stuff without knowing and likewise reconnecting.
Im guessing it may be better to use dip beam splice as a trigger to relay and then the lights come on all the time without need for switch.
I always have them on any way.
