In this month's TBM magazine there's a write-up on the G450X & the Husaberg FE450.

They take them for a ride around some Welsh hills & mention they're near Machynlleth. There's a photo of what's left of a WW2 bomber (just the engine block) & I wondered has anyone any info of where this wreckage is?

Strange as I thought the wreckage had been removed.

There's quite a few WW11 plane wrecks around the mountains of South Wales.

There's a web-site showing the location of them, can't remember the address sorry.

One of them has a standing stone (load of rocks) near by where a
local historian has placed some litrature about the crash.

Here are a couple of websites if you're interested:

Crash sites in Wales

Peak District Air Accident Research

Aircraft Crash Sites of Scotland

If you decide to visit any of them please bear in mind that many are designated as War Graves; they obviously should be respected as such and it is also illegal to remove anything from them or otherwise interfere with them (not that I thought you would, but just pointing out in case you didn't know :thumb)

Theres a Wellington (remnants of) up on the beacons situated above the Usk reservoir beyond Trecastle. If I recall its approx 2/3 miles from the road. Theres a plaque been placed there in memory of the crash/air crew.

Yes I can imagine a WWII bomber crashing while on exercise, but somehow I find it hard to believe that a WWII bomber on the way back from bombing Berlin / Dresden etc etc would be flying anywhere near Machynlleth. :mmmm After all there were a bloody sight more airfields in England or South Wales, it just seems a bit unecessary to fly up towards North Wales. Lets face it, it won't be the first time a journo has let the facts get in the way of a good story - wasn't there an article in Bike magazine that Hograost was German for Hogroast? I don't think anyone told them it was just Steves spelling mistake. :D

I think it was an Damlier benz engined Savoia Marchetti sm79 flown by Carlo Mastragostino.

It was believed to be doing a recce of RAF Valley when it was hit by AA fire.

Carlo went on to do some of the painting in the Italian chapel on Lamb Holm, Orkney

his cousin, Angelo was an Italian fighter ace with 11 kills.

There's a lot in North Wales - mainly on the western Carneddau. You can still find a lot of small parts of wreckage where they haven't been tidied away.

well it appears to be an inline as opposed to a radial engine so that narrows it down somewhat:augie

Looking at the magazine photo it is actually a V12.

In the photo the front 3 cylinders are missing from one side & the snapped con-rods can clearly be seen.

He111

Here in Buckley, We have a He111 in one of our local clay pits!
Got hit over liverpool and crashed landed on some common ground and slid in.

When I used to live in Ponterwyd in Dyfed, there were some crash sites out by the resviours, two if I recall. Might have to see if I have some more details.

I have heard that that there is a WW11 bomber,in the valley just up from brynamman,
Don't know how much truth is in it, but a mate of a mate said he had taken photos of the plane.

the guy who owns magnum motorcycles in wolverhampton has a book with crash sites in wales and goes and finds them a mate went to this one last year decent off roading as well
