I'm wanting to give my XChallenge an oil change.

Is it as straight forward as un-doing the big bango bolt at the bottom and dropping the oil out, or does this bike have a second drain plug in a remote oil tank like the drz does?? (both are dry sump which is why i ask).

I take it oil filter change is just a case of remove old filter and replace with a fresh item?

I suggest you look in the handbook.

But if it's anything like the Dakar (same engine...ish) there is a drain plug in the sump (on the Xchal it nearly sticks out through the sump guard). Don't have to undo any oil feed banjo bolts.
Plus the seperate oil tank will need draining (I don't know where that is).

Good luck..........

Looked in the handbook, and theres information on oil grades and service intervals, but no information on how to actually do the job. but then i guess BMW wouldn't put that stuff in, they'd rather i paid one of their technicians to do it for me....:aidan

do the oil filter after you've got rid of the old oil, even then be prepared for oil to come out along with the filter and deposit itself allover the engine :blast

The main oil drain on the engine is a bolt on the bottom of the engine, not attached to a banjo (on the other 650's at least) there should be a separate oil tank on the bike, on my dak there is an oil drain bolt in there as well. (it'll be the bit where you top the oil up btw :D )

Im about to change my oil on the XCH. Youll ideally need to make a pipe up or a cardboard vee shaped "chute" to get the oil out of the drain nipple on the bottom of the oil tank. Ive just emailed castrol as BM recommedn using castrol GP oil ( as used in my dakar also). However I cannot buy it now. I can get the same grade but not GP its also got a new name. Im waiting for a reply before I proceed to change the oil.

Castrol repy

Just received a reply from Castrol:

The Act>evo is a mineral oil and replaces the GP 10W-40. However, I
would normally recommend the Power 1 GPS part synthetic for the 650's
for better protection and performance.

They are all miscible so using one to top up another will be fine

Before I commit, Ill also check with BM

G650 Oil Change Procedure by Max Cool

1. keep the bike level and remove the drain bolt from the crankcase. Leave the adjacent banjo bolt in the crankcase, do not remove that. The oil in the crankcase should come out now.
2. on the lower rear of the oil tank there is a bleed bolt, just like you find on a brake caliper. Shift a piece of fishtank hose on the bleed bolt and give the bleed bolt half a turn. The oil in the oil tank should come out now.
3. After the bike has stopped leaking close the bleeder bolt, and install the drain bolt again (with a new crush washer please).
4. Put the bike on the sidestand, and remove the oil filter cover to replace the oil filter element. And bolt it up again.

Now it's time to put new oil in the engine. Fill the oil tank to it's neck with oil, and start up the bike. let it run for 15 second and kill it. (really important!!). Fill the oil tank up again until you have poured 2 quarts in total into the oil tank (which is slightly below 2 liters) . The engine and oil tank together are claimed to hold 2,3 liters of oil, but we don't want to overfill.

Fire up the engine, and let it warm up. Ride around the block and let it idle at least 1 minute until the fan comes on. Kill the engine and check the oil level. Add oil untill the oil level is the top mark on the dipstick (measure this with the dipstick not turned into the tank)

is your yearly service due ?

is your yearly service due ?

Thanks for the info mark!

I think i have another 5 months or so before it's 12 months old, but the engine had it's running in service at just 38 miles, and the bike was also in wales for a days trail riding over easter (IIRC it was the sunday-can't possibly think what that might have been for:augie).

It's up to about 600+ miles now, and the clutch has had a lot of use over the past few weeks out on muddy tracks, so i thought i'd just change the oil and filter as a precaution.

Can't hurt can it?

XC oil weight

According to the XC handbook it recommends a 10/40 weight only when operating at low temps (>-20c). What are people using, I've been looking for a 15/40 as suggested but busters / mandp etc dont seem to stock one. I use the Act-evo 20/50 in the GS and don't see why I shouldn't use the same in the XC.

What d'ya reckon guys?

Cheers

OK, the answer to my own question if anyone is interested is that you can still use the act-evo but BM have recently changed their recommended "best oil" to use to Castrol Power 1 GPS. Busters sell 4 Litres for £24.99.
