Hello ,just got a Windows XP disc from a friend.Installed it and it keeps shutting down with a message to say
NT Authority System is shutting down and the RemoteProcedure Call service was unexpectedly terminated.
Anything I can do? I am a plumber not an IT boffin so can you keep it simple, Thanks,
Dave

I think you need the product key about 25 letters+ numbers to activate it.

It's more likely that your PC is infected with the W32.Blaster virus. If you were previously running 98 or Me you wouldn't have known, as it only affects NT, 2000 and XP.

Go here and download and run the removal tool, and check Windows Update for security updates for XP. And make sure your virus subscription (you do have one, don't you?) is up to date.

Sorry I'm no expert but you have been infected by some kind of virus, this one seems favourite http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

If your 'puter ain't working at all try booting in safe mode (press f8 key whileitis booting upbefore windows starts) and then try to view the web page above which gives hints on the 'blaster' virus.

Dave,

Sorry my last should read you MAY have been infected with a virus.

Or...

If you did a fresh install rather than an upgrade it could also be the USB2 issue that needs patching with XP Service Pack 1 or 1a. Take a look in your device manager and check whether there's any question marks against the USB controllers. They'll probably be a pile of them listed and they all need the correct drivers installed to run properly - ie. no question marks.

This normally happens if you're running a USB ADSL modem through an Intel USB2 chipset and an unpatched XP box.

If it is this, you need to download the service pack and update the drivers but won't be able to 'cos it'll keep rebooting. The standalone patch used to be listed on the MS website but is hiding from me at the moment. Know anyone else with ADSL?

Thanks

Thanks Steve and others, seem to have detected and removed 6 viruses and so far no tripping out(fingers crossed)
Thanks
Dave
