Had this for a few weeks now,

It replaces a XT660Z Tenere, and feels a lot less top heavy than that though it is heavier .
Snow has stopped play for the moment as the stock Tourance EXPs seem to get a bit overwhelmed even just wheeling it out of the garage.

I love Yam engines and was really looking forward to testing the bike, i saw one and was really disappointed with the finish and look, the gap between the tank and frame was wierd seeing wires etc.

Couldnt get a test ride so brought another new 60plate GSA but would be interested in a comparison

It is roomy and comfortable. Its early days but the stock suspension seems to be quality stuff /well damped/controlled etc, which is in stark contrast to the 660 which is built down to a price and my old GSA1150 which was appalling when fitted with std shocks/springs. It doesnt have the suspension widgets a full ESA? fitted 1200 does but its easily adjusted if need be.
Seat height is balls of foot to easy rider flat footed of which i think I prefer the higher . Cant say I've noticed odd wires mentioned. Tweaks sofar are fitting of cameltoe to give it a broader and slightly longer sidestand as it wasnt the easiest to catch with boot and had a steeper angle of rest than I was comfortable with std.
Overall it is a wieghty beast compared to the 660 but it feels very compact and not top heavy (unlike the GSA1150 or 660 tenere) .

Quite liked this bike, when i saw it up close and climbed on it at the show sunday, for me i think the build quality is better than the BMs,BUT the one i really liked was the concept worldcrosser they had on their stand, now that was a cool looking bike.:Motomartin

Yup, I've been drooling over the pics and reports. Finally something that will give BMW a run for the money and get them BMW marketing gurus off their high horses...:bounce1

P.S.: how is the "fly-by-wire" throttle response...? Any different than good ole fashion cables...?

Must admit I hadn't realised it was flyby wire until I read the workshop manual as it has throttle cables from the grip to engine. I've not yet got it out of Touring map and full traction control yet as roads were cold and icy when I picked it up and now snow and slush covered.

Very nice!

The bike they launched with this year was only available as a special 'first edition' model with an 'adventure pack' (their words  ). Is yours this first-year edition?

Yup there isnt any other option available here in blighty for the foreseeable. Next year 2011 is supposed to see the release of the "plain" version, though yamaha uk havent done much to publish anything about that from what I've seen. I dont think the method of selling and list price have helped it sell that well but from my experience a few dealers "worked" around the pre order only to get some on the shop floor, and out the door at a more palatable price.

I see the price in this country is still at £13.5K.
I've just looked at the US price.... $13900 !!!!!.
That's under £9K at about £1=$1.56.
If that had been the price here,i'd be owning one now.
!"£@'#^& Yamaha.

Probably closer to 11~12k UKP once you've deducted us sales tax, added shipping/UK Customs duty and vat onto it to get it landed and registered here in Blighty. Plus thats for a plain jane model which wont have a warrenty.

Why's that? just fancy a change?

had a gs1200 before and although the yamaha was:

very comfy (i'm 6'2") , had all the bits (bars, lights, top box, heated grips), fantastic fueling at low revs (feels like it pulls from tick-over), 50 to 55 mpg, easy 200 miles to a tank, handles great (neutral steering, bars don't pull/push through corners) and much better than the gs two up and unlikely to burn a FPC or screw a final drive etc.

only liked it, didn't love it - personal choice

if anyone is looking for one, one owner, all the bits, 4500 miles, spare screen, battery charger - speak to Russell at Riders Cardiff, it's going in Saturday
