My 1976 XT500C won't go :(

Installed new clutch plates and when reassembling didn't line up the dots on the points cam drive shaft so the timing was out. No worries after a bit of trying it fired and ran, turned it off after about 20 secs.

Pulled it apart again and lined up the dots on the gear drive.

Checked the timing.

Gapped the points.

New plug.

New plug cap.

Cleaned the main jet, pilot jet and choke as well as draining the float bowl.

The bike has a good blue spark.

After a few kicks the plug is slightly damp.

But all I can achieve is an occaisional backfire.

Have tried advancing and retarding the timing -no difference.

Could something have been damaged running it with the timing out? :eek

Any clues as to what to try next? My kicking leg is just about buggered :D

Sounds like you have the timing way out now....possibly even the wrong stroke.

I was thinking that - but having lined up the dots as per the manual I'm struggling to see how it could be. Apart from the gear drive there are no other movable variables. Timing marks line up on points opening but it occured to me I'm 180 degrees out :blast The manual I have is only a service manual so is light on for info.

The frustrating thing is that the plan was to put the clutch in then bung it on Ebay to make way for another BM

Show us some pics.....................you never know you might generate a bit of interest here

Sorted -timing was out 180 degrees :(

I'm a dickhead, but a smarter dickhead than yesterday :D

It was something I had inadvertently done.

Bike starts 1st kick now and is running sweetly :thumb2

The saying "can't see the wood for the trees" is appropriate here :)
If you go back to basics- inlet, compression, ignition, exhaust - and make sure everything is playing by the rules it becomes clear where the problem lies. How many times have I been told "assume nothing"

Anyway the bike is going and I have a bruised instep and a dodgy knee to remind me to hasten slowly in future -no wonder they invented electric starters :D

Thank you all for your input.

Still in pit lane. :)
Awaiting replica front guard. Looking in the shed for the locking nut for the other side cover -now where did I put that sucker..........?

I had the same bike BUT stupidly sold it for £400 !:blast:blast:blast:blast
One of my biggest regrets:(
its looking very sweet, lovely bike :thumb

Probably worth $3000+ Aussie dollars (1500 quid) over here. Quite collectable being the first model and 95% original. Lots of these were bastardised way back when so original ones are rare.

Hate adds that mention 'regretful sale' and other such rubbish -who cares? But the XT500 is one bike I will miss. There's something about the big single that puts a smile on your face. Agricultural, lazy, raw power :D
