XT600E dead...

Bike would not started, then almost did.
the battery was very strong, turning over the engine for some time.

Turned off the ignition, the starter kept turning over the engine. I hit the kill switch. That stopped the starter. Turned it back to run the starter began operating again.

Now battery dead... nothing.

Any ideas. Clearly needs a new battery.

Starter relay needed. Battery needs charged but by the sounds of it could do with replacement.
Don't just put in a new battery though. The relay has taken a beating.
