I am thinking of getting one of these little fellas as a second/fun bike to commute and play on rather than hauling my 1150GSA into work.
There seem to be some pretty good deals around. I dont want to buy new and I am hoping to get something low miles with as many extras (Akros etc) as possible.
Any advice would be appreciated on what to look out for, what extras are worth having any common faults.
I have noticed on most bikes advertised that they are listed as 5 gear unless they are 2011 registered. Can anyone confirm this and if there is much advantage to a 6 gear box??

Gears?

I had an 11 plate out on a demo a couple of weeks ago and it was defo 5 gears. To be honest the ratios felt bob on for the road so. Hope that helps.
Dave.

Have one of these myself and really enjoying it.

early ones had some problems with water ingress in the reg rec connections so a fender extender is a worthwhile mod.

The cush drive is a known weak point, I replace mine every 6k as they break up quite easy.

Aftermarket exhausts were not my thing as I find the original works well with throwovers as the heat shield is very effective.

Just did major valve service on my for about 50 quid all in so cheap and easy to home service. MPG about 60 in all conditions. 290 miles tank range

My distanzias work well and can get about 7K out of a rear.

Superb do it all motoring if you only ride solo and frugal in the current economic climes.

mine has 5 last time i got it out and cruises all day at 90mph.

Good piece of kit once its got a K&N filter as it makes it a differant bike:thumb2

Thanks for the advice you've made my mind up. Looking at a black one at the weekend '09 just under 1000miles with Akrapovics up for £4900.Too much? What do you think?

Black ones are the best and the fastest...........

£4900 is about right I have a 60 plate one with 2000 miles and Was offered £4900 as a trade in against a new 650GS but decided to stay with Yam

Too much!!!!!!!

I have a 60 plate black one with similar miles. No akras but has the stage 2-3 air box and fuel mod which make the bike much more responsive. Cans just make noise and are not as practical as standard ones.

I bought it for the same reason as you last year, didn't want to run my RT through the winter. I loved having a lightish easy to ride run around so much I traded the RT for a 800GS!

Rode it to the Pyrenees for the HUMM and I came back even more impressed with the bike.

I'm just getting the bike ready for winter commuting, acf50, muffs etc,
But.... I've been deliberating about selling it for ages, trouble is both bikes are very similar and the tenere is for me a second bike, it cannot do all the things I want from a bike.

So I might sell it. I'm only round the corner from you if you want to look at it. It's not immaculate, it's been used and Yamaha finish isn't brilliant but it ain't half bad.

It's got heated grips, centre stand, MM lowering links, barkbusters, bash plate and rack. Fitted with tourances + a pair of half worn TKCs

Looking for £4250. Interested?

Is the K&N filter change a straight swap with the OE? Do you need a different airbox as spm0912's reply? And a fuel mod?

I've just got back from 2 weeks off road in Morocco on my 2011 XT660. I can assure you this bike is more than an economical run-around! It's a real go anywhere adventure bike, that's why my GS 1200 and Xc tiger stayed at home!
