I asked Rainbow if they would fit a Y_piece to my 04 GSA and whether it would affect my warranty. I was told no, they wouldn't because with a standard can the rear subframe could crack/fail due to the additional weight of the can. Very polite about it etc, but no!

They would however fit a y-pice and remus can and it would not affect the warranty

I have not heard of this issue and since there are alot of y-piece standard can setups out there wondered if anyone had experienced it or was aware of a solution.

I can't see it myself as the Y-pice hasthe same mounting points etc as the collector, perhaps the less rigid assembly overall causes more flex and this can lead to stress fatigure on the welds/subframe, but I can imagine it's worse than loading the bike, different load paths perhaps.

Advise/comfort sought before I swap it myself!! (I was only concerned about the warranty not my technical capability to change it, well that and the backfires etc reported...Nippy Norman says bathroom silicone sealant..I'll give it a try if I proceed)

Jefferies fitted a Y piece to my standard can a few years back without issue. Still fitted a Remus however, when I could afford it.

Although I've heard the story of the cracking sub frame and not met any GSer who has suffered, I have every respect for Rainbow. If thats there stance and they're turning trade away I'd accept it.

Not sure i understand about rear subframe fatigue under the additional weight ?

If the standard can is retainedt, and the CAT replaced with a Y piece , where is the extra weight / stress/? CAT weighs about 8-10 KG
each component has its own mounting point , so in theory independant of each other, so i cannot see the logic .
I have Y piece with standard can 21k miles and not signs of any damage to subframe on my 02 ADV.

Also forget bathroom sealer for exhaust use, see part of previous thread for more info, according to most sensor suppliers SILICONE will feck up your sensor

someone should tell norman

I too have respect for Rainbow, thats why I asked here..don't really want the noise and look of a Remus though, or the cost for that matter.

I think I'll try and fit it anyway..

BTBR,

I had provisionally (You know what that feels like :o ) sold it when I asked if you would still sell yours to me, but had no cash in my hand.

After our 'experience' :( and your reply "I'l sell it to the first person to offer me something with the queens head on it" which I FULLY understand, I had to wait until the deal was done and money in the bank. Unfortunately the vendor was in London commuting to Norwich so everything had to be done by post and even viewing was by a third party member of the site! The check cleared eventually and I had the money in the bank 3 days after you announced on here that that you had sold your bike and it was being picked up, on a Thursday from memory. I had my money the following Monday.

If you hadn't sold it by the Monday, I would have had it, simple as that.
I was a dissapointed :( but thats life. I ended up travelling all over the place to try and find an 04 GSA.

I want to fit some lights, and word and experience has it, that your the light god but, frankly, have been afraid to ask following your last communique.

I have this set-up. The whole caboodle weighs a fair bit less than the cat/std set-up, and mounts to the same points with the same hardware in the same way. It doesn't rattle/vobrate or anything else that the standard kit doesn't do. QED - a "no brainer", as they say.

That not have anything to do with warranty issues. Generally, fitting anything non OEM can be problematic, as it's essentially a modification to the manufacturer's design/build. If a supplier were to fit bits that invalidated the BMW warranty, they could be liable instead.

Just out of interest for future mods, does fitting a Y piece give you any more horsepower or does it just make more noise.?

Slight horsepower and torque improvements due to less restrictive system.

Other threads on this forum have dyno comparisons...search on y-piece.

I just hadn't heard of any possible sub-frame issues before.

My cat was bolted to the bike just below the gearbox. The Lazer Y piece I fitted to my bike isn't. I have the standard can.
This means that the whole exhaust system is fastened to the bike at the head and by one bolt onto the subframe. There is therefore more weight and vibration on the subframe than the standard set up. I have seen some pictures of cracked Y Pieces but not subframes. I don't know what benefit there is from fitting the Remus can for the subframe

I have a standard can and y piece. I fitted it to eliminate surging which it did. I washed the bike today and found that the little exhaust mounting bracket that attaches to the footrest mounting frame had broken. Will post pictures. Bike has 21,000 miles Y piece fitted for about 15,000 miles. :(

Washing the bike today and found this. Remus Y Piece BTW.

Maybe rainbow have seen this before.

I'll have to get a stronger bracket welded up. :(
