Does anyone know if Y pieces are common across BMW models. Specifically would a Y piece from a 2001 GS fit an R1150R and vice versa?

From my experience, yes. I had a 2002 single spark R1150R with a Y piece, which I transferred to my 2003 2 spark GS.

No, both down pipes on the 1100 go to one side of the engine, where as on 1150 they travel down both sides.
