Yamaha launch XT1200ZE Super Tenere

really ?

".....has been designed to take you further than you ever imagined was possible. "

i imagined i could go to the moon...how much further can it take me ?

Cruise would be nice, but electronic suspension - no thanks, my Wilburs will be far higher quality and I can live with the 30 seconds it takes to adjust if adding a passenger.

As it appears Yamaha have not fitted a 180BHP engine the press will still slate it as being too slow / too heavy etc.

Probably will sell OK in the same way as the FJR, the press slag it off each year, whilst sales build on the reputation of reliability and the fact owners really rate them, bonus is the fact it is so similar you could probably swap all your farkles, but with my modded suspension and flashed ECU I am happy to stay put.

Cheers for the heads up Mike. It hasnt really had much coverage from what I can see.

I like the cruise control. I like the extra tweek to the engine. I like the additional TCS option. Re the engine, id say it will enhance the fuel efficiency.

Side panels under the seat Im not so sure of, colours Id give or take. New handlebars too....intersting.

Yamah are very clever with electronics so its more of an enhancement Id say more than an improvement over the current bike. I think theyve made some nice touches. Be interesting to see how it goes in reviews.

@ Rasher: you make good point re some of the farkels. I now an electronic suspension isnt gonna make me go any quick but for some it could be thekind of extra to sway them to the darkside from a GS (?). But yes a wilbur shock is prob the way to go. Been debating one for some time myself.

New display looks good too.

Improvements look well done adding to an already great bike, as long as people can get their head around not needing 150BHP.

If I did not already have one, I would want one, could be some good deals coming on leftovers for those looking to replace an ageing GS :thumb2

There hasnt been much in the way from the press re this bike. The upgrades are subtle enough ubt still. Alway, by way of photos re new add-ons, nout much there.

Looking forward to the reviews.

Anyone go to NEC & get pics / details ?

Sorry, crap pics as there was a queue of people wanting to sit on the new S10 so couldn't get pic's without people in the way....
The LHS switch gear showing Cruise control, suspension and dash control buttons...

And a bad photo of the front 1/2 of the bike:

The programmable suspension is very visible with lots of additional 'bits' around the rear shock, the new adjustable screen mount is similar to the Touratech one in the way it adjusts and a cross bar for a satnav to be mounted on :thumb2

The side stand has been changed with a new heel/toe casting for kicking it down which can be seen just behind the foot rest, personally I don't have a problem with the current one but I guess the feed back suggested this was reviewed.

It looks very nice and I guess it would when Nick Sanders well used bike is right next to it.... :augie

Nice one GsB.

I could imagiem you get the perfect shot then someone walks in fron of the camera, can drive you potty.

Looks good. The farkles on the lft bar...impressive.

Di you notice any significant changes to hte bodywork? Anyone in Yamaha have any feedback to offer over the engine tweak?

What did you make of it yourself?

No major changes in the body work, there is now a cover over the empty frame space to the right of the rear wheel under the seat (that gap that all the crap flies out of and down your right leg).
The seat, mudguards, boxes, headlight, tank, side covers (rad and elecs) are the same, the mirrors looked different and the handle bar mounts look different, not sure what benefits they bring, maybe the bars are higher (I have bar risers on mine, maybe there has been lots of feedback on the bars being too low).
Engine, brakes and drive train all looks the same, but I believe this motor kicks out more power, I'm sure Rasher can chip in here (Rasher knows all about chips).

Hopefully I'll get a test ride from Yamaha soon and I'll feedback from that, but my only concern is I'll like it more than mine and that could be expensive.

Not found much at all about the motor changes, as long as ECU-U come up with a flash for it all should be well, be nice if Yamaha have removed the low down restrictions in 1st - 3rd, but as they almost certainly to do with emissions I can't see it being a lot better, and the Flash on mine improved the whole engine performance across all gears / revs / throttle openings - probably similarly to how Twin Cam GS owners rate the remap on their bikes.

I think the biggest issue with the S10 is the delivery is "perfect" and the lack of any steps in power makes it feel bland, certainly the TC GS "felt" far perkier due to a less linear delivery, also the bike packs a huge low-midrange stomp compared to many other bikes making the top end feel weaker than it really is, in the real world the engine is really nice 95% of the time, but lacks the excitement the other 5%, and also does not give great 0-60 and top end stats, although in normal use it is pretty good, and when flashed has stupidly immense low down grunt.

I will be keen to ride the new model to compare the engine / suspension to my modified old model, but I reckon a sorted 1st Gen (Flash + Suspension) will still best the new one, and for £9k you could buy and modify a late reg low mileage used bike, £9100 will get you a 46 mile 2013 bike right now on bike trader, a fork rework and ECU-U flash would leave change from £10k for an awesome machine, I am guessing the new ones will be about £13k.

The gadgets will certainly help shift units to those drawn to the technologies, and customizable electronic suspension is definitely what I would want rather than having 3 settings someone else thought were good, cruise is also really nice, the one thing I would love to have on mine, not so much in the UK where you can rarely hold a steady speed due to traffic, but when heading across France by Motorway it would be great.

All very valid rasher.

I think the cruise control is a no brainer, defo worth having on any bike if you do a bit of distance here and there. A lot to be said for both arms being relaxed on a bike, look at how it works in a car, its genius.

But...I have to admit, I'm reluctant to flash the ecu as tempting as it is. Id like to try a bike with one first before Id do that. Your points about the engine above are spot on,prob best Ive heard described yet. The punch down low is big, so it doesnt loose out on top when you think it does.

I cant fault the bike. I want to put the seat up full height but one leg wont allow ( previous big off )...i have stock seat on stnd settings.

If anyeone hears anything else re the new model, let us know.

I was nervous pushing the button on a 2013 model but am now glad that I did. I'm not bothered about cruise, definitely wouldn't want electronic adjustable suspension and in fact the only thing that might be useful is the gear position indicator, it's easy to forget which of 6 you're in. To balance that the discount I got off the old model and the freebies thrown in more than make up for that.

I find the riding position and the screen absolutely perfect for me at 1.78m. Once it's run in I'll think about getting the ECU re-programmed and maybe taking out the restrictions on the lower gears although in all probability I'll then have to limit the power with my right wrist to stop the thing wheely-ing everywhere.

So far I've put a mudguard extension on and twin HID's which are definitely useful, sump guard to go on and luggage to get sorted. To be honest I can't find any off the shelf luggage worth a damn. None of it really seems to fit tight to the bike. I want 10" panniers no wider than the 1150GS with a pair of Verns finest, i.e. 94cm. Any suggestions? At the moment I'm trying to twist Vern's arm up his back to modify the left box I have to fit around the silencer and make new brackets. Of course if there was a stream of other buyers wanting his fine luggage to fit the 2014 model then the task might be easier.:D

Oops, that seems to be a hi-jack, sorry folks.

From what I've seen Holans might be your best bet for frames and panniers that wrap around the exhaust. They had a ad on ebay for pannier frames that might be the ticket (though they used a GS in the pic?) and the words were a little vague but they do to this for others including the new KTM1190 so maybe worth contacting them.
PS just googled them and they have this http://holan.pl/en/pannier-systems-...da-pro-cases-2x31l-for-st1200-black-rack.html

Thanks Ian, the frames do look tight to the bike, the panniers look a bit crude though. Rivets in the 21st century?:eek

Nice

Keep looking at this bike and i do like it thing that rubs with me is that Yamaha UK seems to have priced the bike higher than elsewhere.

If you read the American forums they all seem to say great bike particularly as it is so much cheaper than a GS !!

What was your purchase decision based on I know that reliability is good but what else prompted you towards the tenere

I didnt come from a GS so I dont have a particular persuasion towards that or the S10. Been riding Ducati's and Honda's for the last few yrs.

Basically, I cover a few miles, I wanted something for the odd two-up, hacking to work and the odd overseas trip. I also wanted shaft, smooth engine, reliablilty and a bit of character. And something that I wont be selling anytime soon.And....something that wont blink at the thought of 100k mls on the clock

I test rode both bikes ( 2012 GS & S10 ), back to back. For me the GS felt lighter when it was coming off the stand but when I was out on the road the S10 won me over. I'm not afraid to throw the bike around and the front on the S10 felt more planted. I knew exactly what the bike was doing, the back end the same. It is super stable on corners, even in the wet when cranked over. The weight of the S10 has been of some debate, but when its on the move you dont notice it. Anyway, the weight of the two bikes is comparable when fuelled up. Do a search on actual weights, BMW is not what it claims.

You could also consider that the GS is about as common as milk, so why not have something thats not at every turn on the road. I aint knocking the GS but for me the S10 was my choice by far.

The engine is good, you can mod the bike up and its comfy to boot. On the sh1t weather days I wanna go for a blast, thew duke can stay in the garage and the Tenere can come out and handle the weather and bad roads with ease.

its all down to preference.
