Ok, so today I started getting to know the bike and wiring.

Under the front seat there is a yellow relay with wires

1 Thick red ( permanent live )

2 Thick Black ( earth ) Somebody has chopped into this at some point.

3 Thin yellow & black ( ignition live ) somebody has chopped into it at some point.

4 Thin Brown ( I presume another earth )

So, please,
What is this relay ?
Can I use these already chopped points to wire my 6 way fuse block to ??

Thanks in advance

No, I don't fancy that. I'd rather know what it does first.

I haven't gathered any confidence with this can bus business yet. Still a bit wary off it.

You don't say what bike you're looking at, however as this is in the 1200 hexhead section I'll make an assumption; I may be wrong but didn't the canbus system do away with relays ?

Hi, yes the bike is a 2005 1200 gs. I had read that there are no fuses or relays which puzzled me to find this one. I don't seem to be able to find it in any manuals, I was hoping somebody may off had a clue as it looks to be part off the BMW wiring loom.

Just a wild guess here but Steptoe's comment is unlikely to be random - it's probably the starter relay?

But I'd second what others have said - if you don't understand the wiring, don't mess with it.

Steptoe gave you the clue. ( it is the starter relay, on later bikes it is under the ECU`s next to the spot light relays.
The thick Black wire is not an earth it is the +ve feed out from the relay to the starter solenoid. ( BMW bikes and cars tend to use brown for ground / earth).
Run the main feeds + & -ve from the battery to your main fuse block.
If you need any ignition controlled circuits fit relays after the fuse block and trigger them via the side / rear light circuit.
I prefer to use a miniature relay to control the coils on the ignition circuit relays.( less chance of upsetting the can bus and I also make use of the the N/C position on the miniature relay.

Thank you very much. That is the info I needed.

The force is strong on this one.
Relay it is.
Yellow.
Starter, for the use of.

Thanks Steptoe,
I've had a good play with the bike today. Had all the plastics off and getting to know what is where. I've also had a play with the wiring so a lot more confident that i'm not going to do major damage.

I think i'd read that many disasters before getting the bike i'd made myself worried to get stuck in, without talking to others with experience off the machine.
