I have just got my ZUMO 400 , and i need help with a couple of things.

1, I received the 2008 full Europe (update) DVD in the box, and run the disk in the computer,(with the ZUMO connected via USB cable) after installing the base maps it said the Zumo was ready for use, and i clicked finish.
When i press the power button all i have is the splash screen, then the unit just shuts down.
I have a ICON on my desktop called MAP INSTALLER, do i need to install or run this to load more mapping for the uk, I don't have a SD Memory card yet, so cant obviously install all of Europe, but i don't have any thing, other than the Splash Screen

2, How does the unit charge? because its only a 400 it doesn't come with a AC Charger, and its not fitted to the bike yet, so i assume when connected by USB to the computer it should charge, no ?

3, Can it use a 4 Gig memory card or is it limited to a 2 Gig SD Card.

Many thanks for any advise, Gary.

The Zumo charges direct from the bike, but doesn't come with a seperate charger. It does hold a few hours charge once charged.
Don't think it's powered by the usb connection either (may be wrong on that)

Best place for info is Zumo Forums

hi mate, i bought a 400 last week, and had the same problem, your batterys as flat as a pancake:blast, plug into your computer via the usb for a couple of hours, i didnt think it would charge via this but it does no problem:thumb

as for your maps, obviously the bigger your memory card the better, if you want to put other stuff on aswell, but for the 2008 maps ive got a 2gig memory card and the maps take up about 1.3gig, so jobs a gudun!!!:thumb

Thanks for the replys, i will get a 2 GIG card. I was wondering if 2 GIG was enough for europe 2008, but it seems there should be enough space

I'm still confused about the Mapsource software, as in, where is it on the PC. I have a "Map Installer" icon on the desktop, and connected up the ZUMO today and tried running in.

It appears to get to a map page of Europe where you click on regions, to select, and a sliding scale on the right to show the amount of available memory (192 MB spare Approx), although not going to do anything today, until i get a SD card then i will put all of europe on the SD card.

Is this the Mapsource software, where you plan and view routes etc

Im still finding tutorials, and reading/ watching, these tutorials show a window with a taskbar / toolbar along the top, and a side bar on the left with a list on regions selected. I havent seen/ found this yet, the main reason for my confused state.

I just on a fast learning curve with this GPS stuff.

Many thanks again for the help.
regards Gary.

City Nav is the mapping. You use it on the GPS and PC.

Mapsource is only on the PC. Lets you plan routes, waypoints and put them onto the GPS.

AFAIK you should use the "send to device" button to send data to the Zumo.

the map installer just enables you to either put individual sections of the map, or all of the sections onto your memory card or zumo's memory(but of course the zumo memorys not big enough!),

when you open up the map installer, with your zumo connected you should get a pop up on the screen that says something like devices found/or select devices???, when you get this, the next step is to press "next" at the bottom of the page which takes you to the map page where you can select the sections of the map, this is also where youve seen on the right hand side it says youve got 192. somats worth of memory, if we now take a step back to the devices found page, where it says this, its actually a drop down menu, if you click the arrow on the end of the box(aslong as youve put your memory card in the zumo), it will drop down with another option, which is your memory card "portable device", select this and then when you to the map page your memory meter will have changed to the capacity of your memory card:D

like i said you can select difrent sections of the map, but its easier to just dump the whole lot on a memory card, to do this just keep moving around the map selecting all the difrent sections of the map, when your confident that youve selected evrything, click the box at the bottom of the page, sez somat like "create map" etc.(cant quite remember!!) and just follow it thru' but to be fare it does it all for you, also it may have been my puta, but it took me a couple of hours to get all the maps downloaded onto the memory card, its not a five minute job:blast

Thank you very much,
from another post, i managed to get Mapsource, so now have both.

I now realize that Map Installer, and Mapsource, are different.

I think i now understand.

Thanks again.

4 gig card in a Zumo 400

just to add, that i have recently bought a Zumo 400 and they will take a maximum of a 4 gig sd card. :)

Europe help.

I just got a 400 today... replacing my 2610.

I am a Mac user, so never was able to connect the 2610 via the computer.
I am heading to Scotland on Tuesday if the weather is good or Europe if it is raining. I have no SD card with the unit, but would like one pre-installed with Europe... (dont want to go through the Mac to try to load details on)

After looking on ebay, I am wondering if any of the cards for sale there are what I need, to add pre-installed Europe maps to my 400?

Without understanding things properly, is it possible for someone else to just copy their card and load the info onto a SD card or does it need unlocking for my machine?

Any advice would be great, but I need the maps before Tuesday

I'm fairly certain the mapping is locked to the Zumo if the maps are bought on cd/dvd or the SD card they are installed on if bought on SD card or downloaded from Garmin.

I'd be a bit dubious about buying from Ebay without being able to try first in case it's just a copy that's locked to another Zumo or card and therefore unusable. I'd buy a blank SD card then buy the map on download format from Garmin unless you're able to get to a dealer with the maps on SD card. FWIW I use a Zumo with a Mac and although the software's a bit clunky it does work.

Thanks Andy
I was away all week in France and Belgium.... went to Harrow and bought the SD card direct from the ebay store. It worked immediately when inserted in the 400..... I thought I wouldnt need it, but am glad I had it.... it has paid for itself already
