I need to put southern Italy, Austria and bits of Germany and Switzerland onto my Zumo 500, but when i try, the computer says 'having difficulty communicating with device'. On further investigating all the disc space on the E drive (zumo) is full i.e I have no free space to load the maps on. I know I can put all the maps onto an SD card, but is there another alternative to doing this? like deleting other unwanted coutries or parts of unwanted coutries which I have already put on the zumo like all of spain and france.
any advice would be gratefull. As i don't want to go deleting the wrong files now do I?:blast

Built in memory is 450mb, so no. Buy a 8GB card for £20 on ebay.

be careful when buying memory cards. check with the user manual of zumo to see whhether it accepts all kinds, and all gigabytes. some electronic devices cannot use any memory card above 2gb:rob

Zumo will take 16GB cards. I did find out something useful though....

City Navigator Europe NT v9 DVD is 1256 MB total

So a 2GB card will be fine, or 4GB for lots of MP3's.

I'd be interested where you got a 16gb card from but just to point out that the max the zumo can take is 4gb.

First you can try to delete all unused VOICE and TEXT files in the folders with the same name. This frees up a bit of memory.

There is a way to change the pre loaded map, but you have te be carefull!
backup all files before you start this!!

ps: Just loading them into an SD card is much simpler and works fine!!! But if you want to: Here it goes:

-----
The pre loaded area maps that came with the 500 are in the file called
GMAPPROM

Additional maps are stored in
GMAPSUPP
This file is created or overwritten each time when exporting new maps to your 500.
The GMAPBMAP is your basemap. Don't touch this one.

Step 1) Delete BOTH files GMAPPROM + GMAPSUPP
Step 2) Check free memory in the Zumo
Step 3) Check size of the maps you want to load in Mapsource (bottom left)
Step 4) Export your wanted maps to the zumo. They are now in the folder GMAPSUPP.
Step 5) simply RENAME Gmapsupp into GMAPPROM and you now have a new "pre loaded" mapset.
Additional maps can again be loaded into the GMAPSUPP file.

Check if it works
If not: Replace it with your backupfile to restore..

ECM.

Thanks SO much for this tip. I've just bought a French Zumo 500 from Pixmania UK and called Garmin beforehand to ask if I could change the pre-loaded maps. "Absolutely" came the reply - However, I can't find an option in MapSource to delete/replace maps on the device.

Just followed (loosely) your instructions and all is working! Thank you!

David.
