Zumo 500 + world basemap

Hi chaps,

I have done a few searches this morning but can't exactly find the right answer.

My father in law who did his trip from Cape Town to London 2 years ago is setting out in January from South-America all the way to Alaska. He is 61 and his 1150 has certainly been around

He's got the zumo 500/550 I think. He is looking for basic road maps on South-America that will be able to get them from town to town on main roads. Not worried about street level detail.

Would the Garmin world basemap be able to cope with this? I see it comes on a cd-rom so would I be able to buy it on his behalf and stick it on a card for the zumo? Sorry I have become a bit of a numpty as I haven't loaded any maps on GPS's for years to be honest.

Any suggestions or ideas for a simple and easy way to put in a town name and head in that general direction?

He is unfortunately more of a technophobe than me so keep "simplicity" in mind

Everyone has a basemap - perhaps you're talking about WorldMap? This can be checked on the Garmin website and you can zoom in to the area that interests you and find out if it will cover your needs.

I had a world base-map on my 2720 for a while, just for the sake of curiosity. I doubt it would be much good for navigating as it tends to be very rough and ready, mostly straight lines where there are really corners, lacks granularity.

Might do at a pinch though. I set up and calculated a route to South Africa from the UK and it calculated and displayed it on screen. Didn't try doing real world routing using it though. I imagine that it would keep announcing that you are off-route as the route would deviate from your actual position by quite a bit.

Indeed hence in my previous post I reffered to it as world basemap

Okay will investigate more and found some details on someone called smelly biker
