Hi All
I have just had to replace my Zumo 550 with a refurbished item, and the canbus does not power it. The GPS powers up soon after the ignition is switched on but almost immediately powers down (option to run on battery is displayed) when the bikes engine is running. I had no such problems with the original 550 unit, or the Quest.
I have tried a new Garmin mount, checked the insulation and continuity of the lead, variations of: GPS on first, then bike and vise versa, GPS battery removed then refitted etc, etc but the canbus still powers the GPS down after the engine starts. As there are potential problems with the GPS mount/cradle pins corroding if they are permanently powered, I dont want to hard-wire the GPS to the battery.
My latest solution is to run the GPS without its battery fitted, this seems to be fine, it seems that the Canbus 'senses the GPS battery and then shuts down.
Does anyone know of the problems of running the Zumo without the battery connected, aside from the (1) battery needing to be charged eventually (2) the ball-ache of having to boot the Zumo up after each time I stop, (3) the potential loss of data if I leave the GPS unconnected to its battery for too long and (4) losing the allen key or battery or both.
Any help is welcomed.
cheers
Mark
