Zumo 550 Ver. 3.00

It is now, but when I clicked to download it, I got v2.5 :blast

Not that it matters too much, I haven't a Zumo ;)

I downloaded it tonight via the "Garmin webupdater", no problems. :D

Not having one, have they sorted the off route recalculate issue?

Nope
Trying some complicated work arounds with onroad/offroad routes but Garmin do not seem to want to bite the bullet and give us auto-recalculate off and autozoom off.

70% is there and it is a good upgrade (except for the shutdown oversight on the 'pan map page')

Time for round 2 - so close and yet so far

Odd isn’t it. They’ve added features, but not fixed the major issues, auto route re calculation and auto zoom. Hopefully they will come with a later upgrade, because I can’t think why Garmin would want to deny people the option

Which are the reasons for people like me buying it................

Yes it is odd, I'd have bought one but for the inability to stop route recalculations. The streetpilot and questII were unworkable, for me, in auto recalc mode (when I've used friends units). I know Zumo550 will recalc a lot faster and may re-route to the next via point better but I'd be happier being able to disable the recalc. Maybe it'll come in another upgrade, it's probably lower down the must fix list for most people than fixes such as altitude, compass, more than 4 via points, unit lock-ups, etc.

I'd be interested to hear how users find the new via points on intersection/roads, maybe they are treated differently to normal via points and Garmin have got round the auto-recalc problem another way.

I knew I'd typed that wrong :D

No. I'd like those features fixed................

I agree. I've had too many episodes being sent astray by Mapsource/City Nav recalc here in Norway and will hold off buying the Zumo until I can choose Auto Recalc ON/OFF like I can do on my 3 years old 2610.

I often ride off the "beaten path" outside main traffic routes and like to plan my trips on PC beforehand. Non user-selected route recalc on the GPS unit is a real showstopper for me since the Mapsource data for Norway are inconsistent and too unprecise. I've been sent up one-way streets, pedestrian walkways, bicycle lanes and 30kmh villa neighbourhoods in cities like Oslo and Tönsberg.

I'v also experienced that Mapsource/City Nav recalc send me off fast routes like the E39 near Stavanger and the E18 between Oslo and Kristiansand when choosing "fastest route". That's why auto recalc will be a major hassle and PITA for mye usage.

Auto recalc ON/OFF is a must for me here in Norway and I will not recommend any of my biker friends to buy the Zumo until this is fixed. It may take years of user feedback before the Mapsource data here in Norway will be precise enough to advocate reliable route recalculation in certain districts.
I just bought a refurb 2610 biker package from www.gpsw.co.uk and will uppgrade to City Nav 9 on that proven platform while my present 2610 undergoes a USB port repair. A 2GB Compact Flash should do the trick and also have room for some Norwegian Topo maps. My only gripes with the 2610 are the 2000 point tracklog, lacking tracklog saving features and not having a SirfIII antenna.

I'm therefore disappointed that the Zumo still has a "dumbed down" route handling interface. That makes it a non-usable GPS for my prefs. That's a pity, since I was more than ready to buy one.
