I have been looking at the Zumo 550 GPS unit. How come there are so many variations and which is the one to have to get the same coverage of Europe as I have with my 2610?

Buy the 550 and stop pfaffing around. It comes with a bike mount, a car mount and Full v9 European maps. If they say anything else it's dodgy and you should shop elsewhere.

If you buy it, my mate is looking for a 2610. ;)

There is only one zumo 550 unit. So explain what you mean??

I found a couple of online retailers selling "different" versions, some described as 550T others as 550Deluxe, and 550 with European Maps, etc. I suspect they were offering packages, but that was not not how it came across, but now you have confirmed my suspicions.

How do you rate the 550 against the 2610?

By the way, I was in France 3 weeks ago and I met a few Pan-Clan riders. One had a Zumo and said the base maps were crap compared to the 2610. Any comments?

He should have loaded the correct maps for his journey....:D

That said, the 550 has the whole of Europe covered, not sure why he was seeing base maps...:nenau

The base maps on any GPS are crap...

These retailers you speek of, aperently are making there own package or don't know what they are selling.

At present there are 4 more or less equal zumo's

Select each and look at features and "in the box"

In short: the 550 is the most complete, EU pre installed, motorcyckle + car mount supplied
The 500 is: 1 region pre installed, EU on DVD, smaller internal memory then 550, no carmount
(this one could be sold under fantasy names when they just include a carmount, but you still have the smaller internal memory!)

400/450 : As 500 but with lesser features like bluetooth.

Bought my Zumo 550 deluxe less than 3 months ago, specifically to use on my Norway trip. I didn't bother with the 'full' model as I am not het-up about having all the maps on the device hard disk - I can download extra maps to the SD card from the DVD-Rom enclosed anyway.

Got a very very good deal from one of the electrical stores on Tottenham Court Road - it was much cheaper than anywhere else. The maps are brilliant - it works with my phone and I can download podcasts and music onto my SD cards and listen whilst I ride. STRONGLY suggest buying the Star1.com Zumo headset kit though.

Compared to TomTom 6, the maps are just as good and the Zumo has tons more useful stuff on it, like a decent compass, altimeter etc. Download extra POI's from poihandler.com. I now use it all the time, even to and from work, as I can answer calls and listen to Russell Brand. How cool is that!

What do you mean "full" model? Is this the same Zumo 550 but with extras like the headset, etc.? This is what was confusing me, (ok, ok, it's not difficult!) :blast
