i've read of problems with battery drain when connecting zumos to 1200s.

is it best to connect to the canbus satnav socket or across the battery? is there even a definitive answer to this yet?

if its any help at all......i've got my trusty old SP3 wired straight across the battery on my trusty old 1100.

this means i can turn it on - let if find satellites, sort out routes, scratch it arse - whatever it does - while i'm putting on my 'stuff'

stays on while i'm fuelling up too :thumb ( this is Aus - not UK - i don't even need to lift my visor up - let alone remove the helmet )

why not wire it with its own in-line on/ ff if you wanted that sort of thing ?

same with the cars :D

I've got mine (2007 12000GS) hooked up via canbus at headstock and it works a treat. Dead easy to fit, switches on with the bike and powers down about 30 seconds after ignition switch is turned off. Had no problems with battery drain so far. Been on the bike for a good few months now and been round France and Switzerland with it. It prompts you when the power is cut off to give you the option to use battery power so you can still keep it on after the bike is switched off if you want to keep your session open.

Mine's connected straight to the battery using the Garmin supplied (fused) cable. Done in 30min and complies with the kiss principle :thumb2 . Never had a problem with battery drain and no chance of any confusion in the canbus due to gps taking power.

i feel if you have to put up with a canbus bike you might as well take advantage where possible. makes for a very neat & simple job + no fuse.
works best with a battery powered unit IMO so no reboots are needed.

info is not for my bike. my own 12 has an across the battery feed for my old 2610 + a new canbus fed lead to my gpsmap60csx. i don't intend keeping two, i just haven't decided which one's getting the elbow yet.

zumo, battery or canbus

For what it's worth, I connected mine through a nippy normans fuse box, not had any poblems at all with it. seems to work ok. good luck

Connect it to the correct place at the front of the tank. That is the reason for that connector.

Mine works fine:thumb2

My Zumo was wired up via a Centech fuse box ie live all the time. No battery drain problems but I ended up with a charging problem and burnt out pins on the mount. Initially I thought it might be vibration but after seeing some posts on here it may well have been rain sitting in the mount whilst a current was still being passed into the pins. wired through canbus now and no problems:nono

canbus plug

Can someone tell me where to get one of those canbus plugs please

BMW dealer!
I got mine from Ocean, about £8 including postage.:)

Sorry to dig up an old post.

I have just fitted a Zumo to my 1200GS. It is running from the underseat accessory plug with the AutoCom unit. The cables were put into the plug and a dry run revealed the Canbus to be shutting down and the Zumo asking to go to battery power. However...everything was then taped and zip tied neatly in place and the canbus socket does not shut down and the Zumo stays live. It did this last night and also today when it remained "live" with key out whilst I was fuelling up and did not drop out at all.

Any hints / solutions?

Thanks

Nigel

The Canbus stays live for a few minutes after killing the ignition and pulling the key out.

Wander back five minutes later and it will be off...the Zumo running on its internal battery.
