I have tried to create a route but I am unable to remove just part of a route or to get rid of the route creator tool.

Also, although I am travelling fron Dover to Dunkirque the tool only seems to go to Calais.

I feel as if I am missing a whole instruction section! Is there a anything that anyone would recommend as an idiots guide?

I'm trying to create a Route from Plymouth - Dover - Dunkirque - Gent - Strasbourg - Milan - Lake Trasimino - Paestum - Palmi - Palermo (Sicily) (and now for the interesting bit) Sardinia - Corsica - Nice - Orange - Troyes - Dunk... - Dov...- Plymouth.

I must have spent 5hrs so far - any ideas?

Never used a Zumo, but I've got loads of experience with Garmin GPS's and I prefer to make routes on the Computer...

I've always found that kind of work on the unit kludgy at best...

To change the route creation tool you should just click on one of the other symbols in the same box as the the creator icon, there's a hand, magnifier, flag etc in the same box.

Sorted that, but it does not disengage the tool. Can you work on different parts of the route individually or do you have to break the whole route up into shorter sections. I suppose that some of what I want is actually provided by via michelin. Maybe I'm expecting too much. Perhaps I ought to break the whole trip down into day sections (routes) maybe I've answered my own query.

Definitely! One huge route is going to be a nightmare to manage. Break it down into chunks day by day.

If you're using Mapsource to plot the route, then the ESC key will disengage the routing tool.

To insert bits into an existing route, or to extend a route, use Mapsource. Go to the Route tab, select the route, R-click, then 'Route Properties', then scroll down the list of waypoints to the point where you want to add a diversion. Use the Insert Waypoint function (create the waypoint before getting to this step :augie ). To extend a route, add the waypoint before the 'end' waypoint.

To break apart your big route, go to Route properties, select a series of waypoints that represent a days ride (L-click first of the series, shift and L-click on the last to quickly select a group), then 'copy', close the route properties window, go to Edit on the top menu line, New Route (or just Ctrl-R). This opens a new route properties page into which you paste your selected group of waypoints.

Sounds complicated to explain, and apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but its straightforwards once you understand the principle.

Thank you.

I did not know to suck those particular eggs, I do now!

Thanks again.

I use the Dover - Dunkerque ferry route but when entering the points in Mapsource the route always goes Dover - Calais - Dunkerque. Mapsource (and I guess the Satnav) seems to default to that route across the channel. Maybe, because its a shorter crossing the software thinks its a quicker route.

In practice I start routes at Dunkerque as I don't need directions to get to Dover (and its the ship captain's problem to get the ferry to Dunkerque!!). but even if you leave the Dover - Calais route when you arrive in Dunkerque it will recalculate so it doesn';t really matter anyway
