Folks,

My 1989 100GS is going well - but the gearbox is very 'clunky'.

I am the 10th owner and I don't know what sort of abuse its suffered in the past. It now has 49,000 miles on the clock.

Before I go to Norway/Sweden in July and Spain/Morocco in October I would like someone who knows these boxes well to check it over.

Can anyone recommend a specialist (he/she doesn't have to be in Scotland) ?

Thanks.

Bob.

They are all clunky. Check the clutch is adjusted correctly.

Don't worry about it being clunky.

What you want to worry about, are there any whines when it runs in gear, or does it jump out of gear.

The gearbox on my airhead is smoother than the one on my 1150 (as was), my speedo needle doesn't jump about and it starts on the button, first time, every time and my shaft drive hasn't exploded. Maybe I've got a ringer :nenau

Clutch adjustment

Airhead R Cable Clutch Adjustment
Loosen 13mm locknut and adjuster bolt at clutch pushrod.
Adjust cable adjuster barrel at clutch lever until exposed cable at gearbox end is 210mm.
Tighten adjuster bolt at clutch pushrod until it contacts the pushrod.
Tighten the 13mm locknut.
Loosen the cable adjuster barrel at the lever to give 4-7mm play in the lever.
Tighten cable adjuster locknut.

This can take the clunk out of a clunky gearbox.

Before I retired from HBOS I used to travel to Copley, Halifax regularly :blast

Now it'll have to be a private trip (on a bike) :thumb2

Thanks for the advice, I think the clutch adjustment is OK, but I'll check it again. There was a very complicated adjustment procedure published in the BMW Club Journal a few months back - I'll dig that out as well.

The R100 box is a lot 'clunkier' than the one on my 1988 R80 (46,000 miles), that's why I was a bit concerned.

It doesn't whine or jump out of gear though.

I'll have to check the clutch and driveshaft soon so the box will have to come out. I'll pay particular attention to the set-up when it goes back in.

Thanks again.

Bob.

I'm doing two airhead gearboxes at the moment :nenau :nenau

But i'm to busy, can't touch anything for weeks.

Airhead g/box

I have a Spare, Rebuilt Airhead kicker G/box if anyone is really in the shit.
It's not for sale but  if it's a life or death situation something could maybe worked out.......
Whatever, it would be on the Double F principle,>>> you feck it, you fix it.

It's a monolever one, but I think they are the same except for final drive flange??
Over to you for confirmation St'eptoe:steptoe
