SWMBO very kindly bought me a dinky wee laptop for my birthday - a Philips X66 11" screen - very neat and portable.

I decided to install all my old Garmin software in it. Initially it didn't really want to know until I'd downloaded the latest version of Mapsource which is compatible with Windows Vista. Then....I ran into the unlock code issue. I suspect the original unlock code is still in the Streetpilot III box in the loft......somewhere . So I phoned Garmin support on their nice new Freephone number 0808 238 0000 and spoke to a very helpful young lady by the name of Laura. 5 minutes later, I have unlock codes for the two copies of City Navigator which I'm installing sitting in my Inbox.

I'm impressed..... :)

Now am I dreaming or did earlier versions of Mapsource have the facility to input an NMEA signal which allowed you to track your position in real time on the PC?

It seems that earlier versions of Mapsource did indeed have a GPS tab. That's been replaced by nRoute...

Having downloaded and installed it, I've discovered that it only works with a Garmin GPS outputting a Garmin format signal into the laptop rather than an NMEA signal. However, since neither of my Garmin GPS units have USB cables... :(

However....again....it looks like that slight problem may be able to be overcome by the judicious application of GPSProxy. Although, I may have to persuade the in-house ubergeek to massage it to make it work.

Or....I could just pay $29.95 to register the trial version of GPSGate which I've installed and which seems to do exactly what it says on the box....
