Hi Folks ,

Four from Cork are planning a trip to the Dales the first week in July. None of us have ever been there before and would appreciate some tips. The internet is ok for info but you cant beat local knowledge, you know the important things like best pubs, green roads and fords for GS, best sights etc.

All info appreciated.

See you soon

The Dales

Just about any of the roads are good GS roads. A good taster is the circular route covered by the A6108 from Ripon to leyburn then the a684 to Sedbergh and the A683 down to the Devils bridge( biker meeting point) at Kirkby lonsdale. A blast down the a65 to Skipton then left to Grassington on the B6265 stay on the B6265 back to Ripon.
A shorter circular route would be from Settle take the B6479 to Ribblehead (a large railway viaduct) then right on the B6265 to the A684 right at hawes stop at the cafe on the left as you enter the market place. then a684 to Asygarth ( the water falls colud be worth a look with all the recent rain)then right on the B6160 to Grassington then back to Settle
Or a B road run from leyburn up to tan hill (highest Pub in England) not as commercial as Johnie Foxes or visit the Butter Tubs (rock formations) by turning right in Thwaite on the B6270. Or just ask the sat nav to take you to Crackpot (which has had a lot of press about cars getting stuck following the sat Nav but is do able on a GS)

In fact any combination of dales roads are a good days riding. Think of the roads around Blessington and over the tops to Avoca and you will get the idea.

Hi Gizmo

The Yorkshire dales is great GS country. Below are some of my favourite routes.

Fast sweeping routes

A65 from Skipton to Kirby Londsdale - weekend meeting place for bikers at Devils Bridge just before you get to Kirby Lonsdale.

A683 from Kirby Lonsdale to Sedburgh.

A684 from Sedburgh to Hawes through Asygarth Falls to Leyburn.

Interesting back roads.

Settle to Hawes

From the market square in Settle head north and take the right hand turn towards Horton in Ribblesdale. When you get to a small hamlet of Stainforth turn right toward Halton Gill - this takes you past the back of Pen Y Ghent.

From Halton follow the road down litton dale toward Kilnsey, but when eventually you get to the main road (B6160) turn left towards Kettlewell.

Kettlewell is a good cafe stop, follow the B6160 to Buckden and then turn left towards Hubberholme and Hawes. Follow road all the way to Hawes.

Hope you have a good time.

Carefull on the above at weekends, police in unmarked cars (Dark blue Subaru Impreza a favourite) all over it like a rash, have to say not without cause !!!

Try Skipton-Grassington-Kettlewell-Buckden-Yockenthwaite-Deepdale-Gayle-Hawes Return B6255 to Ribblehead To Horton-Settle through the back onto Kirby Malham road-Airton-Bell Busk-Gargrave back to Skipton proper GS roads.

Try and pop into the Fountain in Linton - Old Peculiar on draught

If you are landing in Wales and want to see the 'most dangerous road in Britain'. Travel up the M6, turn at Junct 29 onto the M65, then at junct 13 (yes it had to be) follow the A682 (the most dangerous road) to Kendal and the Yorkshire Dales.
Its not the road thats dangerous !!!!!!!!:rob
