Am thinking about a bike trip in Spain using the Paradors for accomodation, mainly to keep my wife happy and give her something to look forward to at the end of the day (she is not too keen on the m/c side).
They also offer a system where you can follow fixed 'Rutas' (routes) for 7 days, at a reduced rate. Has anyone used these? and what is your opinion and recommendations. regards john

Not used the fixed routes ones but have used the 5 day specials. Just need to make sure the route follows the discounts for maximum savings, but they do give an amount off the "normal" rate so it's not wasted money.

Personally, I'd go for the Paradors that are in interesting buildings rather than have great views eg Segovia / Salamanca as these ones tend to be modern concrete typical boring type hotels.

Recomendations, Cangas de Onis, Baiona, Sos del Rey Catolico. To do list is headed by Granada.

Stayed a couple of nights on an organised tour. They were a great experience; in old castles, lovely rooms and that little bit special. I wouldn't hesitate in using them again if I needed to book some 'nice' time enroute with SWMBO.

A quick mention for a couple of others. Toledo is modern, but the views of the town of the hill opposite are fantastic. A short taxi ride and you can explore to your hearts content. My own favourite is Merida. It's in an old convent. There are roman pillars everywhere. Safe underground parking. Oh and did I mention the Roman Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre, and the Roman Circus, all waiting to be explored. Have a great trip.

Nice to see you here too Gadget....

Have to agree with Gipsy. Toledo is fantastci but you need to book a room on that side so you can sit on your balcony and simply drink in the view of the alcazar and the cathedral arcross the river gorge. At night it is all lit up!

Others well worth the night are Avila and Tortosa, both old buildings with a luxury background.

hi The Paradors are very good. An alternative if you are going to Catalonia is to to consider booking accomodation with www.cataloniabiketours.co.uk They can offer good clean farmhouse accomodation with full board. They can also offer escorted daily ride outs which will take you to areas that you may not find on your own. If your wife doesnt fancy the ride to get there she can fly , be picked up from the airport at Reus and then meet you there.
Have a good trip.

If you are going south you MUST visit Granada. Bl..dy hot in Summer but the Ahlambra is awsome

The Parador in Granada is in the Alhambra itself. Well worth a visit.

Parador 5 night card

How do I get one? It's not clear on the Parador website, do I just book the first hotel and collect the card from there?
Andy.

Hello Gadget
Try 'Alistair Sawday's - Special Places' web site. Really nice places to stay that kept my missus happy on our trip through Northern Spain, Picos and as far as Northern Portugal.
Bryn

Thanks skellum, unfortunately I would have to pay a supplement of around 200 Euros to stay at the Paradors I wanted making it a bit expensive. I'll find alternatives. :thumb

Book your Paradors online (for those that qualify on the dates required) and then buy the card at the first Parador you stay at. That's what we did last year.

5 day card

How long is the 5 day card valid for?
I`m thinking I might not get to stay in one for 5 nights. It would be good if you could carry it over to say, next year? john
