This thread will detail Byways & UCRs etc in the area covered by OS Explorer Map 131

The intention is to Waypoint and photograph each end of a lane.

Where possibly the photos will be GeoTagged
and when hosted on Zooomr
will be available with the

UKGSerByway131

tag for searching purposes.

When hosted on Zooomr you can click on the image for different/larger sizes and also to see a "mini-map" of the GeoTag.

Unless otherwise noted, all tracks are GS friendly on Tourance type tyres - at least in the dry ;)

Walked a couple of hundred yards of it - looked easy to get stuck. As I was on my way to the North Wilts meeting at Pewsey, I decided to come back another day with some assistance :)

Clive

after your last piece of mastery, if this one is half as good, my wife will be an offical "Byway Widow" :)

Did some of the Basingstoke area ones Wednesday on the way back from Winchester - brilliant.

Good work!

cheers

A bit of a mixture, some ruts, roots through the trees. Crosses the Hants county border halfway down the hill and shown as a Restricted Byway on their online map, but I didn't spot any signs and the Hants end still shows "Right of Way" :nenau

Hi Clive,

Top work on the lanes :thumb2 Do you travel with a GPS and have any waypoints?

:beerjug:

Do you travel with a GPS and have any waypoints?
I collect the waypoints rather than enter them from a map; it's a long term project and I've got a long way to go :)

With Mapsource you can enter the co-ords in British National Grid format from the names above e.g. SU343574 will become SU 34300 57400

Clive this is a great idea for each area and an excuse to get out on the bike.
What is the difference between a UCR (and what is one), a BOAT and a byway?
Somerset regraded nearly all its rupps etc to restricted byways and there are one a few BOATs.

Indeed - and a good excuse to find and visit places I've never been :)

What is the difference between a UCR (and what is one), a BOAT and a byway?
UCR - Unclassified County Road - in the areas I visit, sometimes tarmac (or what is left of it) and not often just mud. Often have those signs saying "Unsuitable for vehicles" ;)
BOAT - Byway Open to All Traffic. I think generally people use the term Byway when they mean BOAT

Somerset regraded nearly all its rupps etc to restricted byways and there are one a few BOATs.
Berkshire has a number of RBs, but a fair amount of BOATs.
Hampshire has a lot of RBs, some of which are nowhere near houses, people etc and often are Restricted where they cross from another county and BOATs in the other county i.e. the same track and IMO "fair game" (if nobody is watching) :augie
Wiltshire, locally, is probably the best county for GS friendly tracks - brazillions of BOATs and not many RBs - I'll be starting an Explorer 157 thread soonish, as lots are on my commuting route near the A4 :thumb2

Cheers, I shall sit down with the maps and see if I can find a few to go and check out. This is more the type of gentle off roading I want to do with the GS now.

The other part of Church Lane - appears to be regularly used by horse riders.

Potentially of interest, instead of marking waypoints etc if you have a Nokia S60 phone with GPS you can run ViewRanger:
http://www.viewranger.com/vrproductinfo.php

It maps your location onto an Ordnance Survey map as you ride so you can be sure to follow the right BOAT. Has support for seeing live where your buddies are etc.

I have it and it's great.

Very usefull Clive thank you

As a bit of a Mapsourse novice not sure how to find the SU coordinated that you quote. If you "go to position" it expects LatLong and "Find" it expects a city. Could you provide guidance?

Also is there a way of turning a track into a route without having to detail all the waypoints?

Thanks

In Edit/Preferences - select the Position tab - then select British National Grid in the grid dropdown.

When you then "go to position" enter the OS reference in format XX eeeee nnnnn e.g. SU309501 will become SU 30900 50100
