Has anybody looked at the Garmin Edge? It's described as a cycling unit but it looks like it could be really useful for off-roading. It looks like it might take memory map maps... but I'm not sure. Anybody else tried it?

A lot of the functions are more for keep fit than trail riding. It mentions laps rather than track points
I have been using the Legend cx (current modelLegendHCX) for some time and find it ideal for trail riding. I don't think that garmin units will display memory map but it is possible to draw a track on the PC in memory map and then transfer that to the unit via a usb lead and then use this track to navigate. I've also loaded mine with city navigator as it a rote finding unit.
There is a unit the Road Angel I think that displays memory map:beerjug:

Mav, I suppose you have seen some guys use PDAs in Otter Boxes or suchlike with memory map. It's looked a bit clumsy to me but I know Clive does (I think) or was it Nin and some others and they seemed happy with it.

I was considering that - just finding a cheap PDA on ebay... but I saw a message on the forums suggesting using an Edge, you could get real time positioning on Memory Map. With something like 20 hours of battery life and being fully waterproof this would be a great unit purely for off-roading and I wouldn't need to power it off the bike.

I currently have a regular garmin road unit (2610) - I'm assuming that I can transfer tracks to that in a similar way to the Legend... but I was hoping that I would be able ID tracks that I come across when riding.

I saw the road angel, but there seem to have been some mixed reviews on here of that company :nenau

I don't know the spec for the 2610 but give it a go. If you can't upload tracks try converting them to routes and up loading again.:thumb2
