Okay, I know it's still a long way away, but planning's half the fun, right?

I'm looking to do a trip to Coruna on the north-western tip of Spain at the end of April next year. Rough route is Calais - round the west side of Paris - through the Massif - Carcassonne - over the Pyrenees - along the Picos - last bit along the coast. I'm planning on coming home a slightly more direct route.

I'll be avoiding motorways (and no tolls if I can help it), camping and cruising slowly enough to enjoy the scenery. No more than 300 miles a day on the way there.

I'm familiar with France (Carcassonne used to be a regular haunt of mine), but haven't been to Spain.

Any ideas about which passes might still be closed?
Any suggestions about what to see/avoid in that northern section of Spain?

And... would anyone else like to come along?

Its a long drag down through france & back why dont you get a ferry
to santander one way & ride back to calais on the way home.

Because getting there is half the fun ("Tis better to travel expectantly than to arrive" - Confucious), but I may catch the ferry home.

At that time of the year travelling south means you're gradually getting to warmer and warmer weather (hopefully), which is a lot more fun than starting in the warmth and gradually going back through the seasons to Britain.

I've just checked the price for P&O from Bilbao to Portsmouth. It's only £149, so I probably will come home by ferry.

PS. This is the third time Ive been on a trip with you,

my wife is getting worried:ymca

I posted on the ADVRider forum too. One bloke said he'd like to come with us as far as Carcassonne and might be able to put us up for the night when we get there.

A Spanish rider has offerred to take the day off and escort us through the best roads in the Picos.

Tempted...?

Room for a small one...

Hello all, names Kris, count me in please!! Geordie sent me the link to this page. I've had the pleasure of doing time with Mr Foote back in the day so he can most definitely vouch for my sanity (or lack there of)...

Of course. We'll probably keep the numbers down to, I don't know, half-a-dozen bikes. Your name's on the list!

I ride a Tiger, so have put the post on a couple of Triumph forums, but no takers so far.

Warmer !!!

We went in May this year and it was a lot warmer in the UK than in Northern Spain ! so i wouldn't count on it being warmer :D

Looks like you need the Jockinese presence to balance things up a bit :mmmm

If it's planned to be right near the end of April then I'd be up for it.

I've just had the dates confirmed.

I need to be at la Corunna on the evening of Thursday 30th April and can leave again on the afternoon of Friday 1st May.

I reckon that means leaving the UK 25th/26th April and arriving back home around 6th May (or earlier if it's by ferry).

Sounds perfect....

That time of year sounds perfectly cold, wet and miserable - Just like the three and a half runs up and down the M8 to Glasgow today.
Perfect.
As long as my rota isn't sh4t on in the meantime then that should pan out just fine...... He said hopefully.

Journey home

Ah, but the hope is that although it might be like that here, we'll be heading towards the sun.

Looks like we'll be returning by ferry, as it's (currently) £149, including a cabin.

The first available ferry is Monday 4th May at 12.30pm (arrives in Portsmouth Tuesday 5.15pm).

That gives two clear days to explore the area or perhaps just nip into Portugal.

Portugal....

It just so happens I used to live in Lisbon, Estoril to be precise:thumb2

The Port caves in Oporto are defiantly wortha visit:beerjug:

Speak to you soon

Any more interested?

If we can book the ferries before the end of the year they're usually cheaper than waiting until nearer the time.

It's cold, dark and wet outside and I had to jump-start the bike this evening, so I'm thinking ahead to sunshine and warmth - putting the finishing touches to the route.

I'll be booking the ferries before the end of December, so who's properly interesting in coming along?
