Norway - Murmansk - Finland

Hi!

Im planning to drive from Kirkenes to Murmansk next year.
Has anybody here tips about Murmansk?

From Murmansk I want to drive south west to Finland and down to Helsinki.
I am not quite sure which route to take: the Via Karelia
parallel to the Russian border or the route at the west coast.
Any recommendations for Finland here?

Gunter

It depends on what do you want to see and feel. The western part of Finland is quite flat, a lot of fields, more population, towns and villages and of course the sea. In the east there is a lot of forests and lakes, few people and towns, more hills etc. My opinion is that in the east you have better roads for GS (even gravel if you want) and the landscape is more beautiful due to the lakes.

For example:
Punkaharju
Koli
Lake Saimaa

Perhaps I can give you more and detailed information if you tell more about your plans.

Hei Jyrki!

Thank you for your reply.

I will be on a circuit of the Baltic Sea next June.

I am going to drive from Germany to Sweden and alongside the coast up to the north.

I want to drive from Lulea to the Nordkapp and from there to sail with the ship over night to Kirkenes From Kirkenes to Murmansk for a day. From Murmansk to Finnland and down to Helsinki. …..

Here are some questions:
Is the boarder crossing from Russia to Finland possible at Raja-Jooseppi?
Which route would you choose from Ivalo to Helsinki?
I am interested in fascinating landscapes and historic sites. (And traditional local food)
Could the track from Ivalo to Helsinki be done in three days?

Gravel is not my favourite. I don’t have a GS yet. I will drive my old R.
(The next bike will be a GS!). Hills and lakes are welcome (Mosquitoes not)

The links/Examples you sent suits exactly my taste.

Just a small thing, you'll need to arrange visa for Russia in Germany, only Scandinavians can get one in Kirkenes.

Visa

Casper

Yep!

Thank you for your advice. It is 50 Euro for a 3 days visa.
A lot of money and bureaucracy for just a few hours in Russia.
And I will need a second visa for Kaliningrad.

Just a small question.

From where did you get your estonian nickname - Mesikäpp?

:)

Some answers:
- Sorry, but I haven't been in Russia there
- The route Ivalo - Helsinki could be something like that: *kliks*
Of course depending on how much you have time, weather etc. I would like to say, that three days is not enough. Sure you can drive it in three days, but then you don't have time to stop and look around and visit interesting places.

I'm living near this route, so we could have a real finnish Sauna and maybe... :beerjug:...

Terre!

I have very good friends in Tallinn (Nömme) and Rakvere and I like
the Mesikäpp chocolate.

I like much more in Estonia. But SAKU or SAREMAA DZINN wouldn't be good nickname imho.

Proosit!

Oops, cannot use PM's because I'm not a subscribed member (yet)?

But you can send me a email to my (junk)mailbox: jj.roskaposti(at)gmail.com

By the way: I had a german Nordkapp-biker in my sauna a couple of years ago. This was his last visit to Finnland...;)

Hi Jyrki!

You've got mail!

 I'm sorry I can't find your mail. Did you sent it to a @gmail.com address I mentioned above or...??

Don't be afraid of the sauna, maybe we can keep the temperature below 100 C :D
