Bin the cans ffs:rob

Get wise and get akro's:cool::D

Looking good:thumb2

NO !!!

Top box on an SMR-yuk!!

And be careful about fitting Akros.

Two mates have had 990SMs and both had Akros.

One switched back to standard pipes as the FI is so much better with the standard map and the other is about to sell his bike as he is fed up with the snatchiness.

Strangely the SMT is totally sorted,FI-wise.

Tell me how yer SMR runs? Had the 990SM and sold it after 4 months PX for a GSA 12 as was not good to ride especialy in the wet ,on roundabouts or slow.Hadthe throtle cam,16 tooth front sprocket ,but it felt Shite unless at full bore.Love the look of the SMR,and the tank is less intrusive to the knees, but want to know the EFI is sorted before going back to the orange side:nenau A Georgeous looking bike:thumb2

I have the Akros on my 990SM (not 'R') and the first thing I did after the dealer installed them and re-mapped was to pull the baffles out and re-initialise the FI. I have been riding the bike like that for 1800 miles now and considering I also have the 16T sprocket and G2 throttle with 400 cam it is still bad on the throttle snatch front (sure Joybringer will be alone soon to tell you how good his is though :augie).

Anyway as I am selling it I though I would pull the cans off and flog separately, I spoke to Trevor Pope in Gosport about a re-map and for the cost and faffing about I decided not to bother... BUT he did have some advice regarding the cans. Apparently the Akro map is written to only work properly with the baffles in, take them out and the fuelling ratio is only near correct at WFO. To prove a point I put the baffles back in my cans and re-initialised the FI again and went for a ride...well I be damed, it really is like a different bike, smooth as silk but the throttle RESPONSE not snatch still catches me out on the mini roundabouts if I am not careful with the right hand.

I had asked about whether the SM-T map could be loaded into the SM and a shrug of the shoulder and a vague look was all I got back :mmmm

'Tis weird,Nasty,isn't it ?

I rode mate's SM990 with Akras and is was bloody horrid-much worse than my SD used to be.

I also briefly rode other mate's SMT and it was MUCH better.Silly sod has gone back to SM and hates it.

Mine is that much better I would keep it but change is as good as a rest and better for the licence :augie.

Nice bike :thumb2 Sod the looks, top boxes are really useful :rob I even contemplated trying to fit one onto my superduke, before coming to my senses and just getting some kriega bags.

As for the akras making the FI worse, the SD seems to be better with them. Plus it's an SMR, it's meant to be mental anyway :D Though the biggest difference was putting a bigger rear sprocket (40T IIRC) on funnily enough. Just by making the revs higher at 30 in 2nd made it much nicer in traffic, and more of a wheelie monster than before.

The SD was much better with Akras. But the Sd and SM/R have a different set of maps downloadable at the dealer depending on model and exhaust fitment.

My SD was def better with Akras. It was better yet with PCIII and dyno time, but still not brilliant with all of that.

My mate's SM990 was much worse with Akras-the dealer (who is a mate of ours) re-installed the correct map for the Akra Evos twice but it was still crap.

Shame,as the new SMT is like a totally different bike,so KTM seem to be finally getting to grips with FI.

About bloody time as it's taken them 4 years !!!!

Little experience of ktms till last year got 990 SD, first thing i noticed was how snatchy it was at low revs,, pain, but i did get kind of used to it, and i realy enjoyed the bike. but i can understand why people have not been happy....
Got the SMr early this year, and to be honest, it is much much less snatchy no where near as bad as the SD..
Ive been riding various 1100& 1200gs for the last 5 years. in my younger days CBRs, GSXRs etc. so going back to a more " sporty bike" the KTM is great fun.. but i must admit i did find the SMt a little twitchy at first, maybe riding GSs has made me a little bit lazy when riding as they are so forgiving ..
I am taking it to the Italian dolomites next week with a group of freinds, someone made a good point about the topbox making things a litlle light at the front, i havent ridden it loaded yet, but it seems fine empty..
The good thing is we are cheating a little this year,
1. 1 and half hour ride to hull ferry
2. Arrive Rotterdam hour ride to Hertogenbosch
3 Overnight train with bikes to Bologna
4 Short motorway blast.......
5 Dolomites
6 Nice hotel, TAKE OFF TOP BOX.......
7 Twistys......:):)
Or at least this is the plan ,, fingers crossed.....
So really i wont be riding it that far with the box on,, think i will mis heated grips though, (cant beleive i said that, i must be getting old)

Any advice or things to look out for on the SMr would be appreciated...

Oil Consumption...Some burn as much oil as a litre a 1000 miles, mine has used about 400ml in 1800 miles. There are some horror stories on this but it does seem to be the norm that they guzzle a drop or too of Motorex's finest

They can get hot if sat around at toll Booth's for long on tickover, this probably contributes to the oil consumption.

Chain adjustment.....Keeping the chain adjust right really helps with keeping any snatchyness down.

It'll probably wheelie rather easily on hard acceleration, but the top box isn't hanging out behind the back wheel so I should think you'll be alright, be a bit like having a very light pillion I'd imagine. Sounds like a great trip :thumb2 Didn't realise there's an overnight train in that direction, I'll have to look into that.

Yep, concur. It will get the front up if really pushed, but you do have to push. The luggage you have shouldn't influence that too much - I have a similar amount on my 990SM, and didn't notice any negative impact, even up and down the twisties on some poor road surfaces on the Route Napoeon. The luggage will still be lighter than a pillion, anyhow.

I'm using Kriega stuff, but like the look of that BM stuff - quickly removeable, etc. Any more details, like model numbers, where to buy? Does it bolt to the rear carrier without too much hassle?

Check oil level regularly and follow the method in the book (it REALLY expands after a long run) - the difference between min and max is 600ml. Make sure the fuel breather/overflow tube isn't crushed under the fuel tank (results in slimy 'condensed' fuel dripping over your drive - it's the black tube dangling by gear lever) and bleed the forks from time to time.

That's about it, really, no major quirky bits :thumb

Check the KTM forums on this for your own peace of mind :augie

It would appear (and I can confirm) that if you do not get the oil hot enough before you check it (4 bars as per book is water temp and the oil is not hot) then it is all to easy to over fill the bike with oil!

Most experienced KTM owners check their oil after a good run as this ensures the oil is up to temp, just make sure you leave it to idle for a couple mins and then stand for a short time again before checking.

How and how often do you need to bleed the forks????
Ive looked in manual and found no mention of this,......

On My SM I have never done it as its a road bike  On my dirt KTMs I did it after every race or when stopped for fuel in enduros, the forks work harder on a dirt bike and so pump up...this may happen on a road bike too though??.

The easiest way to tell is to bleed the forks after a good thrash around, remember that this should be done with the weight of the bike off the front so the wheel has to be off the ground and the forks un-loaded. Remove the little screw in the top of the fork caps, as you un-do it you will hear a little 'pssst' as any pressure is released...If you do not get this then I would say its not worth doing on a road bike. I will say again that this does have to be done with the wheel off the ground and the forks un-weighted or you will just create an air void in the forks if you do with the bike sat on the stand.

....well thats my understanding on it anyway :D

It's mentioned in the Periodic Maintenance Schedule (page 35), and there's a short 'how-to' on Page 40.

About every 1000km/600miles.

There's a Philips or cross-head screw North of the top of each fork leg. Just unscrew that a turn or two - or remove it if you're careful and either don't let dirt in or drop the screw :blast

I've never yet heard a psst! or whatever, but it must build up some kind of pressure.

Thanks for that,,,
must read properly in future instead of just "scanning"

Catching ferry tonight....

Must Go.................:)
